K&N Typhoon intake @ SEMA
K&N finally finished their Typhoon intake. They had one displayed at SEMA except for the carbon fiber cover. They claim 9hp to the wheels. They got pics and part #s on their site. Looked clean in person.

2003 Nissan 350Z"
So apparently it's not for sale as of yet.
Here's a cool pic of it mounted in a 350Z though

How is this differ from the other CAI's out there?
Has it been reliable in the past with other applications?
Are their HP gains realistic? What about torque?
Will the warranty extend to the engine in case of probs?
Is their a water valve?
thanx

Jeff I'll switch in a heart beat if it makes what they claim. Lets test it on our cars, mine is still relatively stock and we have Injen #s already. We'll have cat #s by tomarrow. 800 miles on the cats, that should do. Can you fine me a UR main pulley or a set is ok I want to put it on for Stillen and I'm trying to set something up with TechnoSquare for this week too.

I should be able to answer all these questions Monday. Also, if it doesn't have a water diverter I won't use it in my own car but will be more than happy to get them for you guys. I'll let you know....
It looks a lot like the design of the Gruppe-M in that it has a secondary scoop piece that mounts behind the grill. See the second picture on the site.
The Gruppe-M filter housing itself looks much nicer IMO but waiting to see pricing (the Gruppe-M is overly expensive).

Hate to be the pessimist, but...
A while back some guy from K&N was on here talking about a prototype Typhoon unit and mentioned some pricing. I recall being wholeheartedly unimpressed with everything they presented, and I seriously doubt a CAI can consistently produce ~9WHP gains based on everything I have seen form other manufacturers.
More than likely this is just K&N getting into the 350Z intake market too late in the game, and with too much carbon fibre. I maintain my stance that K&N should just stick to what they do best, which is making filters.
EDIT: Ah, I found some of the sketchiness I mentioned:
Then, he changes his tune a bit...
Finally, he posted this:
For K&N's sake, the final production unit better work a HELL of a lot better than that thing they dyno'd! Based on that guy's initial postings they are 5 months late and probably a hundred dollars off their initial estimate. For twice the cost of the Injen and AEM, I would rather buy the Gruppe-M!

I don't have any raw numbers, but it will be in the $400+ MSRP range. Due to the complexity of the design, and numerous components included in the kit. We gained real good numbers that I can not release

I'm not to sure exactly how much it will retail for, but we are targeting a low $500 mark.

Hello,
Go to this link. We prototyped this vehicle. The finish of the tube is RAW, so imaging it polished or powdercoated. This will give you an idea of how the Coupe will look. A two-piece complete cold-air system, which can convert to a short-ram, if needed. It will be released the same time as the 350Z.

Unfortunately I myself have been trying to get a straight answer from K and N for what seems like a year now.
What I do know for sure is that they have finally officially released it, and to my suprise I was told it would retail for under 300. Don't hold me too this but this was what I was told at SEMA. But who knows with all the parties and things to do in Vegas
hehheh
anyways just thought I would share what I know.
Also another difference between the K&N and other intakes is if you look closely in the pictures they mount the MAF directly to their pipe. Just something I noticed..

How nice would it be if that were true....if it is, I'd consider buying the damned thing! But with all the bad stigma surrounding it (ie. 2X as expensive as competiton, 5 month delay, etc) I am a little bit apprehensive...
on another K&N subject...
what is up with K&N's filter condom/screen?
i mean.. if you're so afraid of getting the filter dirty, why even have an aftermarket filter in the first place? just keep chucking the stock filter away when its clogged..
i thought the main reason for having a K&N filter was so it would be washable/reusable... i think adding a mesh screen would just inhibit air flow if its THAT fine of a weave to protect the filter from getting further soiled..
it almost like you have to clean the filter twice... the larger particles on the screen, and the finer dust/dirt on the actual filter itself..
