Possible to convert AEM CAI to short ram style intake?
#21
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!
Is this really worth arguing over? If you dont want a pop charger dont buy one! I dont really care either way. Since my car had it on when i bought it, i support them!
Is the pop charger taking away business from what you sell 03basesedan? I really dont see how it affects you...
Lets answer the original question of "Possible to convert AEM CAI to short ram style intake?
IF and only IF the title was "Eff AEM CAI intake, should I go back to stock or pop charger?" THEN we could argue and pee in each others cheerios!!
The point of this thread was to answer above mentioned question. Not to formulate opinions.
Can't we all just get along!??

Well the heat shield does work, go out and data log a bit. My engine recieved 8 degree warmer air than whats listed on my ambient temp gauge. While parked my intake temps move up fast, but i'm not a drag racer and the temps also comne down really fast too.
Dyno charts, some posted with the hood open show increase in power, ones with it closed show no gain or decrease.
Go ahead and run along kid.

I did an experiment this fall.
I brought a Pop Charger to the 1/4mi. I was also supposed to test a Stillen intake, but that never panned out. On average, my times were about a tenth slower with the Pop Charger over the stock intake. My theory is that the Pop Charger was sucking up hot air off the line because the filter element was too exposed. Conditions were a little warmer, but the car felt as if it hesitated off the line compared to my runs with the stock piece.
My trap speeds didn't really show any difference, so the perceived power gain was not there.
Another thing to consider is Rob's intake test. His theory that a cone filter changes air flow into the MAF makes sense, and I feel that not enough research has been done to produce the ideal intake for the 350z/G35.
Rob noticed that the engine was reading greater air flow, but it seemed that this air flow was not actually there. The ECU was being tricked. He suspects that this is a result of a cone filter vs. a panel filter (the panel supposedly has a smoothing effect on the air), and the cone produces a different air flow pattern. As a result, the A/F ratio changes, sometimes dramatically, with only an intake. To me, that's a bit discontenting, so I stay away from intakes.
I haven't had time to personally dyno test any intakes, but if someone wants to lend me one, I'd be happy to.

As weird as it may seem, I do drag race my auto G35 sedan.

I data logged at Cal Speedway, i never pulled hot air except for the time i was sitting in the hot pits.

Like i mention, while sitting still you do injest hot air, very hot air. Once you start moving the hot air is gone and you suck ambient air. I do agree that a popcharger is not good for drag racing just because of this, but drag racing is lame so who cares.

Drag racing is cheap and easy. I like it, many people like it.
