Default Possible to convert AEM CAI to short ram style intake?

I have an AEM CAI system, and I'm so tired of the car going into limp mode when it rains. I've gone through the forums and I know I'm not the only one having the problem. The bypass valve won't help, since a little bit of moisture gets sucked in when the filter is wet, and causes the MAF to go nuts. I have to wait for it to dry, disconnect the battery and do it all over again. What I'm wondering is if it might be possible to remove the part of the CAI pipe that goes down the front of the car, and just mount the filter in the engine bay on what's left of the top part of the pipe. If I have to, I know I can get a new ram air style intake, i'd just hate to spend another couple hundred bucks when I might be able to modify what I have. Thoughts?

I've got a Nismo CAI that I had to make shorter. Your pipe looks alot different than the Nismo CAI though, so that may be a challenge for mounting. I've had it shorter since I got the car back in '06 haven't had any problems, love the sucking sound on acceleration too!

Yes it is possible. What you need is a simple support bracket. You can not have a filter hanging on the end of a unsupported tube.

So by the time I'm done messing around making some kind of bracket, it might have just been easier to get a shorter system, and just sell the AEM....?

I had the same problem with my AEM cold air back in 2006. I sold it and bought a pop charger instead. Haven't had any problems since. No reason to continue running a cold air when it's been proven that there's no added benefit.

That's what I'm thinking. I've never been a big fan, and I'm just trying to figure out the best, quickest and cheapest solution to get rid of the CAI and go another route.

Agree. Some intakes, such as NISMO, are designed for short or long. Others are not. You have to ghetto rig which often turns out like junk.

An inexpensive and clean replacement is the Wolf pop charger.

JWT Pop charger ftw!! Sell the AEM, maybe take a loss, but a healthier engine will thank you.

From what I understand the pop charger is pretty much just the cone filter, right? I don't have the stock tube anymore...

No, the pop charger is 1/2 and 1/2 stock and new aluminum pipe. With filter(S) of course. You can probably find someone selling one near you on here Good luck with project

PopCharger and new Cobb intake tube will be slightly over $200, then sell the AEM for ?? to make up the cost. No more problems.

Why do people keep recommending the Pop Charger?

I don't understand why everyone thinks it's a good intake...

It's probably the best of what's available, but (as I'm sure it's abundantly obvious by now) I'm all for the stock intake.

Tony even posted, either on here or G35Driver, that he cannot recommend the Pop Charger, why is everyone so enamored with spending a couple hundred dollars for some noise?

8 years of no power gains, additional heat soak, and gummed up MAFs?

Just because an aftermarket item is popular doesn't mean it's good.

I want to know the reasons for choosing the Pop Charger.

No difference in heat soak, any heat soak you would get is from the intake tube, and its the OEM tube.

8 years of power gains is the proper statement. Unless your one of the idiots who think that the hood must be closed on the dyno. (do some searching and figure it out)

Gummed out MAF? Lost here, actually it can happen to anyone with an over oiled filter. Nothing Popcharger specific

It was already on the car so +100000 for me!!

Any bolt ons are for looks or sound anyway--i dont think anyone is wanting a pop charger to put them in a new class of car or anything... Spend your money on what you want!

No difference in heat soak? The heat shields around the Pop Charger don't seal off the filter element from engine heat.

Also, what power gains. The Pop Charger doesn't make crap for power. I'm not talking about the Stillen website dyno either. Show me a few dynos. Everything I've seen shows no increase over stock.

Tony made that comment. It's on this site somewhere. Search. I'll take his word over the intake nut swingers any day.

Over at G35Driver, people aren't so willing to accept intake = gains. At least with this application, it seems like it's a bunch of marketing BS.

Well the heat shield does work, go out and data log a bit. My engine recieved 8 degree warmer air than whats listed on my ambient temp gauge. While parked my intake temps move up fast, but i'm not a drag racer and the temps also comne down really fast too.

Dyno charts, some posted with the hood open show increase in power, ones with it closed show no gain or decrease.

Go ahead and run along kid.
