For all it's worth, I've got a drop in K&N too. I definitely did not feel a loss in hp and I doubt I felt a gain in hp. The only reason I didn't get a cold air intake that goes into the fender is cuz there is speculation that while at speed, the inside of the fender is more like a vacuum cuz of the way the stock bumper is designed. With the wheel moving, it sucks air out of that area so having a CAI in that location is no good. Take it for what it's worth.

A new MAF sensor is $$$$ and the gains from a filter are pretty small.

My butt dyno indicates about a 6 hp increase from the drop in K&N. I think Nissan got it right locating the intake where they did. I cannot see where the CAI kits could be of any benefit.

Moral of the story: (Butt dyno + accuracy) = 0

nissan has a good design on their air intake system.. people have dyno their injen and aem, and results are varied..g35c people are even trying to buy our intake pipes for some gain! buy whatever makes you feel good, and if the butt dyno works, then by all means use it!

Well, i bought one, had one on my last car and I noticed a difference. I also think that my timeslips show that something is going on considering it is stock except for the K&N

There is ZERO way an aftermarket drop in filter is going to make any type of noticeable difference in your time slips. If anything your times are probably improving because you're becoming a better driver (which is 100x more valuable than any aftermarket part). That or the outside temp is just dropping, fewer ricers dragging water down the track, tailwind, etc.

i'm trying to avoid all this check engine light, oil in the MAF problem so i'll just stick with an OEM drop-in filter for $8.50. save the intake money towards a nismo exhaust and random cats.

The only time there is typically a problem with the K&N's leaking oil on the MAF is when they are dripping wet when installed. But, if you rather we have the Nismo exhaust and Random cats in stock, ready to ship!

This was like the 1st mod after I got my car a year ago..
I felt no difference, and many people said the stock filter was actually very much up-to-par, so I sold my K&N to someone for like $40 on this board![Wink](https://my350z.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)
When it comes to any mod that can give you a max of like 15-20hp, it's all in your mind. Even when I put on my Borla TD, I don't *really* feel a difference... I mean sure, it might have given me an extra 12-20hp... but I don't feel it.
Do I still love my purchase ? Sure, the sound & bigger look alone is worth it..

In reading all of this MAF sensor problems with the oil filters, I'm getting a little nervous about it. I've had mine in my Z for over a year now, but I only have 7000 kms on the car. Haven't noticed any problems with it, but I'm curious to know where the sensor is so that I can look at it and see if it needs to be cleaned. I've used K&N drop in filters on all 3 of my Nissans and never had a problem. I've had one in my Pathfinder for 3 years without so much as a hickup. Same thing with my Maxima. I would be curious to know how many people with the drop in K&Ns have actually had a problem. I think I'll start a poll and see.
Edited to fix my horrendous spelling

I too have the K&N drop in. While I can't say if it gives more HP; I can say it does allow the engine to rev up quicker.
I am happy with it, and when I added the Z's intake tube, I noticed even more quicker revs.

Even if the K&N did give you a few HP there is NO WAY you can feel that on your butt dyno. No way no how.
There a lots of stories who "FELT THE ADDITIONAL POWER" for mods, even when the mod actually LOWERED their power.
It is called placebo effect and nobody is immune.
even a REAL dyno is not able to reliably measure 2-3 HP. Sorry.
