Is anyone else waiting for the Crawford Plenum to get a little cheaper?
I was just wondering if I'm being a cheap azz, or are there others waiting for the $$$ to come down? Will it ever?
$500 ($450 member price) seems kinda high for it, especially if you trade in your's. I could see $500 for a complete replacement unit...$300 for the job + $200 for the stock plenum. How many hours does it take to do the cut, weld, and grind job?
Will the competition ever finish theirs for a big comparo? It seems like a nice product with nice gains, but I have base its value on what it is, and not hp per $.

Patience is always a virtue......
Also keep in mind that if you want your front suspension to function the way it is designed to by the factory.... you must also purchase a separate strut bar for $200 more.
I too will bide my time......

As popular as the Crawford plenumn is, eventually someone will clone it and sell it at a discount. Im not sure what their cost is, but it can be done cheaper in larger quanities I am sure. At $300 every dealer should just put it on the car out the door so the Z will get the advertised HP. =)

8 hrs @ $65 per hour ... labor would sit at $520
$35 in additional parts for ONLY the plenums.
Then $200 for a core if not returned.
This would sit the plenum cost at $755 retail.
Currently, without a core returned it is $650 per plenum.
Then think about the countless number of jigs that are constantly having to be made to keep up with the high demand. All the new tools (i.e.) grinding wheels, plasma tools, welding supplies, powder coating supplies, etc... Whew, it adds up!
As things stand unless something drastically changes, I cannot foresee lowering the price anytime soon.
Thanks for your interest!

Yes, I have been waiting for it to come down. To me, the Plenum costs $650, because I will not be without a strut bar and it will cost $650 to get the 9peak 19redline gain... I would love to buy the plenum, but will wait until more plenums come out before I decide.

Not really THAT hard to recreate.
Entrust me, unless you are out of the ordinary... you won't have the tools in your garage to just "build it" though.
Cost was actually lower when it was first offered. Don't remember what the price was, but it was cheap than the plenum is now.
I like the plenum, but since it doesn't really add anything under boost, I will decide if I want boost first before I decide about the plenum. This plenum seems to be for N/A.

Why not just shell out the dough and get the plenum? It's proven to be effective and made by a guy who's not just out to make a quick buck. Plus the price ain't coming down anytime soon.

a little healthy competition is never bad for the consumer... economics 101
In all honesty the market is not there yet for any other manufacturers to take the initial hit of production. Lets take the casting direction for a minute . . . Initial costs for the 2 molds necessary (yes the stock plenum is two cast pieces) would be in the $5K - $7K. Then you have to put them together then have them machined and drilled. What if its not right after that . . . more time and $$$ will be needed. Nissan can afford this because the same plenum is being used on mutiple vehicles (100,000+ units/year).
Anyone can do what Doug did, but it takes time and money. If the return is not high enough (which it is not, just ask Doug) then there will be little competition.

Would demand go up if the price went down, thus inceasing profit? Can Crawford turn out enough plenums to do this? I'm wondering how many would jump if the price of the plenum was lowered to something like $425, and the bar to $150. The numbers look a lot nicer at $5xx.00 than $650. I'd be in for sure.
Whatever happened to that other plenum another member was making? If it performed as well as it looked you would be asking who is crawford? But how often do we get that in the aftermarket?

You seem to forget Crawford also made the most gains to date with their headers. Something NISMO nor Borla could not seem to do.
