Very beat up HKS exhaust..from grime to shine
I good friend of mine got a new exhaust over the weekend on his G35 and gave me his old HKS exhaust. I didn't know how bad they were until they were off the car. I will be fitting this on my Z by cutting it shorter after i'm done.
Here is a picture of when we took them off.
i tried to clean it up by just a rag and some nice metal polish but i didn't look any better from the picture above. It was so bad, i was thinking of just scrapping this project. the rust was just too bad. and there was salt damage or something
Symptoms were :
-bad rusting
-pitting in metal
-scrape mark on the bottom
-stained oxidation
-oil/dirt/etc stuck on there
I'm not done yet..but have about 3 hours into it. Still need to do a bit in the crevices and the rest of the piping and such..ran out of materials. I'm confident now since this was the worst of the two pipes
The following steps were used. I had to bring in the buffer for this one.
-Clean off pipes with glass cleaner
-sand with 600grit
-sand with 800grit
-sand with 1000grit
-sand with 1200grit
-use steel wool
-use high speed buffer with metal polish on an orange cutting pad set to 6
-repeat until shine desired

He has long tubes with the exoticspeed exhaust and it's the best sound i've heard to date in person. i drove it around too, sounds rediculously nice.

Consider yourself 1000 bucks richer, looks amazing. I really do love my HKS, the youtube videos made me actually hate the HKS at first.
I can't wait to get everything on my car looking as good as new, including a thorough cleaning of my HKS. Anything special to look out for when cleaning the tips to not mess up the burn?
And that G35 does sound like sex, I could only imagine how it sounded in real life.

You're doing a damn good job with the work.
This is a sign from god for me, my HKS is almost as bad.
Thanks for the process write up.
I'll get working on my exhaust as soon as it's not 40 degrees outside.
