To use bolt on exhaust system or not
Hey guys,
I have a question. I talked to a local exhaust shop about changing my oem exhaust. I was told by the shop that I would have to buy a bolt on system such as HKS, Borla, etc because thats how I would have to replace the exhaust on my 2008 350z. I have seen the Y pipe sold alone by Stillen. If I'm not mistaken the exhaust comes out from the headers into the cats and then into the Y pipe that goes to a resonator then down a pipe to the muffler at the rear of the car and out the exhaust tips. So I'm confused as to why I would have to buy a bolt on system when I should be able to just replace the Y pipe and the muffler without changing it all out. If I'm wrong about this please correct me. Thanks for all the very useful help and info you give.

Oh man. I'm new to these forums also but you've had to be on other forums to know not to ask questions like these. Use that search button as much as possible. But to answer your question, yes you can buy just the Y pipe and just the muffler if that's what you want and bolt them on.
OEM and most aftermarket systems are composed of three basic pieces: Y-pipe, mid pipe and muffler/tips. Separate Y-pipes are available and are relatively popular.
A full bolt-on/cat-back replacement is most common because you get pieces that fit and work together. Not that you can't mix and match between manufacturers, but it's simpler and safer to get a system.
