Default Using V-Band clamps for exhaust silencers??

Just a quick question, does any one on here use an exhaust that uses v-bands in stead of flanges?

I have a custom true dual that I needed to added extra silencers to reduce decibel output from 112dB to <105dB. I really would like these to be removable so v-bands look like my best option so far.

The extra silencers will be in the centre of the exhaust in the prop tunnel.

Are v-bands as strong as a bolted flange joint?? Any one think I'll have any problems etc?

Thanks.

I've done it before and it works just fine.

Been running 2 V band clamps on my motordyne exhaust for almost 3 years now. I do suggest having an extra clamp if you remove and install them often, the threads like to strip out if you tighten them to tight. I also work on aircraft and use them at work all the time, the thread strip from time to time, just like a flange bolt seizes or breaks.

I change my exhaust at the track all the time, i just smoked my first clamp this weekend. Need to call Hydrazine and order a couple extra's.

That's good to hear then as I'm looking at adding two silencers on v bands and keeping the straight pipes for road use and swap in the silencers for the track.

I'll post up when I get some!

To avoid stirpping the threads, you can always put a bit of grease on the thead when you put the clamp on. Stainless steel V-bands are bad for this (stainless in general), and a bit of thread lube will go a long way.

Other than that they work great.

Antisieze is much better for this, should have mentioned it earlier.

You can also use two nuts on the v-band clamp instead of one. That distributes the load across more threads. I wish I could find longer longer nuts but two together seem to work fine. It's also a good way to keep using a v-band that has a stripped couple threads. The two nuts will get you past the stripped point. Can you tell I've taken off my v-bands like 100 times? Love the MD exhaust design - easy to mix and match components!
