Default Titanium Tips Changing Color

I know titanium changes color with heat, but I was just wondering if anyone else with titanium exhaust tips has experience theirs changing colors unevenly. Ive done a few track days and thats when they started to change, but its only the outsides that are a blue color, where the insides are still stock looking. Id like for them to be even, but Im not sure how possible that is, maybe a blow torch or something? Any input would be appreciated.

This is what mine started as :

And this is how they look now

but the insides still look as how they started.

I'm sure you can use metal polish to get rid of the burn and torch it again evenly

My HKS titanium tips have been pretty even and I have driven the car decently hard for about 2 years. Never really experienced any change of color.

I'm considering just polishing them to a silver finish anyway. Here is a pic for reference.

But you can polish to a silver finish and try and burn it again, although I don't think the color will be as bright or as even as the original tip was when it was new.

I doubt that anyone could match a factory titanium
Look without a lot of practice. Just clean them up.

Thats very odd...you have to get titanium pretty hot for it to change colors like that....never heard of something like this happening before...

One of the tips on my HKS faded slightly, it's annoying enough that I may replace the exhaust.

Maybe it has something to do with how your cleaning them? I rarely put soap on my tips i just rinse off with water and dry them...maybe its a chemical cleaner issue?

I usually just use car wash soap when i wash my car and just some water. I only noticed them to start changing when I started tracking my car. I dont mind the look of the blue, I just wanted them to be even lol.

You can see in this picture a little better how the insides haven't changed, but the outsides have.

Hmm^ is the injen a TD setup? if not maybe this is a sign of uneven flow with the catback from each tip? Ive always been curious about that myself with non TD exhausts...doubt it matters really but still interesting to see it first hand

it is the injen track edition true dual, i bought it used and supposedly the previous owner bent the tips and had them re straightened, couldn't imagine that would cause this tho.

^hmm thats strange...I guess you could always just source out some new burnt tips (non injen) and get them replaced...? or go the polishing route but i have heard its a pretty tedious project to remove "heat" coloring on Ti

You can polish the blue off, really it is similar to a anodized finish. You could re-blue them with either a careful hand and a torch OR...

You can do it the same way HKS or any other company blues them which is using a hobby variable power supply with your tip as one anode and a another piece of metal in a slightly acidic bath. Supposedly diet coke is acidic enough to be effective. The voltage into the anode controls the hue of the color. It doesn't take a great deal of electricity to make this process happen.

Why not just polish them up and get rid of the burnt look? In some ways I think the all polished looks better than the burnt. The tips for the HKS exhaust I think retail at something stupid like $500 bucks and are really hard to find.

Here is an example of someone removing the titanium burn, just by polishing by hand (it's an exhaust for a Evo).

I kinda like the burnt look for now. I emailed Injen about replacement tips, I think they quoted me 70 a tip for their newer ones with the rolled lips, but whats to say it wont just do the same thing yanno.

Wasnt a super big deal, was just more curious than anything as to why they were doing this lol

can always polish it and put the burn back in and get it to the color that you like.

after polishing, before re-burning...

after heating it up again

I know you can get quality burnt tips from Motordyne at a similar price...
