Aftermarket Y Pipe for Stock Exhaust?
Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy an aftermarket Y Pipe for my 2006 Z with stock exhaust. I've searched and couldn't find much on this subject.
1. Would a Y pipe make the stock exhaust sound louder?
2. Would it fit the stock exhaust? (I'm looking at an AAM 3inch)
3. Any power gains? Some sites claim 10hp, but i know that's bs
4. Anyone done this with their stock exhaust?
Thanks for your input!

The HP promises from Y pipes can be very misleading.Y pipes will eliminate hiss&
rasp in some sytems.Adding a 3" pipe because its larger than OEM is not gonna get you anywhere. In fact,it will hurt your performance. No matter what you select, without a tune to balance out the mixture, you will never realize the maximum power gains and return on your investment.Remenber, exhaust systems are just that,a system. There is more to
the design than just welding in some parts that don't help the exhaust flow.

Just about every aftermarket y pipe on the market has a 3" outlet. You'd be choking up the exhaust because the oem midpipe & muffler has like 2" piping.. it might make it a little louder.. but would honestly be pointless unless you get an aftermarket exhaust.
Makes sense, thanks for sharing some knowledge! I've never thought of them as a "system" I always just thought each individual part would do something if you add it. So I'm assuming test pipes on stock exhaust wouldn't be good either? More flow to stock size, clogging it up?

in general though, most people start with an aftermarket cat-back, then work their way back
This thread was MADE for me haha. I used to run that exact setup op, stock exhaust with aam 3 inch y pipe. Made absolutely no difference in my opinion over stock. Same sound/performance. I also ran test pipes, aam 3 inch, and stock exhaust. The stock note did get louder, but it wasn't a pretty sound. I suggest you just get an aftermarket exhaust if you are going to get the aam y pipe.
