vq35de basic bolt ons and tune results
I actually did all this a while ago but I finally have the time to share it with you all.
Got my Z back in 2009. It's the first gen Z33 and it already had an Injen CAI . This is my first sports car and first manual trans car too. I was also new to car tuning and, didn't know where to start.
I found someone selling a Crawford upper plenum and MD lower cheap so I jumped on it. Also picked up an under drive pulley and threw all that on at my buddies shop. On the drive home, the only changes were a deeper sound and a little more acceleration. The next day I got it tuned at Church Automotive testing, They have great tuners, there I highly recommend them. Above is peak power.. This one shows how much AFR changes when swapping parts. Since I didn't baseline before the parts I don't know how much these mods picked up but they had stock DE non-rev graphs on file and they put down between 240-250.
To recap; Injen CAI, MD lower plenum, Crawford upper, stock exhaust and tune gave the car a boost of about 20hp. This shows my peak gains. Again good tuning goes a long way.
The car felt much stronger, but after 5k rpms I would want to shift to the next higher gear because the top end felt weak.
Then I came across someone wanting to trade their HKS replica exhaust for my MD lower plenum. He ad a rev-up so I would be taking his lower plenum as well. I was down for the trade because I knew it would help my top end. So we swapped parts and then I took her for a spin and she felt like a totally different car. With the old setup the acceleration was strong up to 5k then it fell off, now the car felt much softer up till 4k then it pulled to 6.5k.
The car felt like it needed a tune, so I took it to Church for a re-tune.
Again the tuner does wonders.
Here is a comparison of old setup tuned vs new tuned.
And finally the old untuned vs new.

Yeah that 292hp basically means nothing to me. The 30hp gained is what makes me smile. Becuase people still say our cars "dont respond well to bolt ons" or whatever, I really just wanted to show the potential of the 350z. All the parts I have are used and with 2 hours on dyno and software cost me less than $1000.
