Default guys over 30 ...which exhaust?

no offense.....but i know what i thought was cool when i was in my early 20s and what i think is cool now (at 36) has changed quite a bit.
I want aftermarket exhaust that helps the performance and sounds cool.....but i dont wanna be screaming over it to talk on my cell or have people looking from 1/2 mile away as i drive up. so....which one?

I know what you mean.

I used to go for loud exhausts such as Greddy Power Extreme. To some, that wasn't loud enough. To me, I consider it loud if the exhaust note gives me a headache.... which my Greddy PE did. I must have been young. Despite that, I kept it.

Now I'm much older and don't want anything too loud. Also, I do not want the unwanted attention from the cops. I have Amuse Ti and loving it. Great sound and great looks. No/ little attention from the cops either.

Nismo or Borla...both sound good without being too loud yet are styled more conservatively.

I am 31 and prefer more of the Japanese tuner style...so I went with the Espelir N1 style twin canisters which are louder than stock but radio and cd's get boring...I often find myself keeping it in a lower gear just to hear the noise.

Hey Jim,

Is Espelier the same exhaust as the one on the Project Z car at the LA autoshow?

I plan on getting the Nismo. A co-worker has this exhaust on her Roadster and it sounds great. Not too loud, but definitely louder than stock.

So I don't understand. Why can't a 22 year old, that has obviously done much more exhaust research than you, offer you some advice?

Borla and Nismo are good considerations. Both have their strong points, and both have some faults. Both retain a stock look, but the Borla may be prone to leaks and other issues due to it's construction. The Nismo design seems to be more sound, and it is an OEM part, but it generally makes less power than the Borla. Both produce a nice and generally subdued note relative to the rest of the aftermarket offerings.

The Amuse R1 has been praised by many people for its sound (there are clips floating around), and I think it sounds unbelievable. Tips are close enough to stock as to not draw much visual attention, yet they are very visually distinct because they are titanium. I'm not sure of the power gained by this exhaust, but claims have been substantial. It also cuts alot of weight off the car. It does not replace the factory y-pipe. The major downside is cost, and sometimes the wait if you can't find one already in the US.

I haven't heard them yet, but the Apexi N1 and Worldsport axle back systems shouldn't be oppressively loud. They are cost efficient as well, but I don't think they are full stainless.

Greddy, Injen, and Veilside are three companies I know you should stay away from.

Good luck.

Dan

I'd say the Fujitsubo is the one for you. Sounds incredible and very quiet around town.

I'm over 30. I have heard both the NISMO and Borla. Either one is perfect for what you want. I like the looks of both. The borla is a little meatier in tone. Both are about the same in volume. The borla opens up a little more about 4000 rpm, it also has some resonance at low rpm.

The Nismo looks like it's better quality. The borla is guaranteed for life (I think)

I have the borla and am completely satisfied. The butt dyno tells me there is a definate Hp gain.

If I remember correctly, Nismo is designed by Fujitsubo.

31 and all too rapidly approaching 32.

Go with the Amuse, you won't regret it.

I was thinking going either Borla or Nismo and I'm 27. The only thing I don't like about the Nismo is it's not a dual. I don't want the super loud Injen sounding exhaust either I know what you mean. Just wondering if anyone that has had the Borla TD installed has had problems with exhaust leaks? The local performance shop ( if you can call it that ) said if they did the install they would like to weld half moons around all the connections. To me this just seems like more of a pain in the *** if and when I ever decide to take it off? Any opinions?

Being 43 I had the same concerns as you. I narrowed my choices to Borla or Stillen. I finally went with the Stillen for the superior craftsmanship. These were expensive at $1400 installed. After dropping in the $40 K&N filter I am very pleased with the sound and performance. Idle, mild acceleration and cruising, all produce just a little louder but comfortable sound. Hard acceleration is where you hear these babies (perfect).

Easy choice after some comparisons for this 45 year old enthusiast, Nismo - - $825 from my Nissan dealer, my son and I installed in at home - - second to none on quality - - great sound -- hp/torque improvement is noticeable IMO.

Does anyone have sound clips of a NISMO catback with testpipes?

I just installed the Nismo/Weldina exhaust and I'm completely happy with it. A bit throatier but not too much louder. No raspy 5'" fartcan noise, and excellent construction. Fitment is perfect, so home home installation takes only about an hour with the proper tools.

My G-Tech tells me I've gained 7.8 rwhp after SAE correction. So it doesn't give the most power gains, but better than I expected for Nismo S-Tune.

I've seen and heard the Borla and it too has exellent construction (although many more welds) and similar sound characteristics.

Here's a pic of the Nismo exhaust next to the OE exhaust

The Borla has some resonance at low rpms??? I was thinking about Borla, but I really hate ANY resonance on an exhaust system (had some on a Greddy exhaust on my old 300zx)

Can you describe the resonance or do you have a sound clip???

Thanks!
