Turndown exhaust
I'm going to assume he wants the exhaust to end before the rear axle and just turn down. If I'm right it's a horrible idea in a hatchback as the fumes can be pulled into the car. You want the exhaust to exit behind the rear bumper.

Already in a jocular mood then this.
But back to OP's original question...
Back in the day, I ran an over-the-axle-then-dump exhaust on one of my jacked-up (Gabriel Hijackers FTW!!) Chevies. Looked pretty cool due to the cam pulsed cold exhaust - brakkety brakkety brakk brakk.
However, on a Z, since the exhaust goes under the rear axle line, this would require short turn downs at the rear exit BEFORE the axle line - potentially creating ground clearance issues- particularly on a lowered car. Evidence the usually beat up Y-pipe flex pipes.
No real advantage power nor lookswise to a turn down, IMO.
If you wanna do something that gives it that "race look" (operative word being "look"), 45-degree the pipes, exiting aft of the doors. However, as was stated in this thread, good chance of exhaust fumes in the cabin.
Or side pipes.
