Default Opinions on buying used exhaust systems.

Hello everyone. I'm pretty new to the forum world. I am currently in the market for a Motordyne exhaust system for my 03 350z. I was offered a used system but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea. I'm contemplating trying to save money buying used and risk problems in the long run or just spring the extra cash and buy new. I tried googling for other peoples experiences with buying used exhaust systems but nothing comes up regarding the matter. I was hoping to get some opinions on whether people think buying used aftermarket exhaust systems is a good idea. Also maybe if you guys can give me tips on what to look out for when buying used exhaust. I'm really torn between possibly paying half price for a used exhaust system or if I should just pay for a brand new set up. Especially with a system as expensive as Motordyne. I would really appreciate feedback on the matter. Thank you.

Everyone's experience may be different based on original build quality, driving style, plus road conditions like salt. Used also has the drawback - how many cars has this been on?
You can get some great deals on used parts, just make sure you get some very good pics if not buying in person.
Let us know how it turns out!

Motordyne in Cali, having one of their exhausts on my car would bring me to the conclusion it's a safe bet. Only prob you may have will be with the condition of the flex pipes in the XYZpipe.

If the exhaust has spent it's life in CA and doesn't have a lot of miles on it, relatively safe bet unless it's been dragged on the ground.

As JHC said though, if it came out of a snow bound area with salt on the roads (DBA, you KNOW I'm talking about you... ), watch out.

I've bought three used exhaust systems in the last two years.... all three the same. I put the worst condition one on one of my cars - that in itself says a lot because I'm really particular about parts I put on my car - the other two virtually new with 5k and about 11k on each, respectively. Resold one, still have one off car.

BTW, bought one of them from a fellow forum member and totally happy about it because we'd conversed and with the "safeguards" in place for posting on the forum, I felt comfortable. (Also bought two sets of wheels from fellow "members" here.) Nothing's perfect of course but I find I'd rather buy from someone who's been "vetted" - as best as one can be - here than from CL....

So yes, if you do your due diligence - get detailed pics from all angles and develop a rapport with the seller - you can get decent hard parts used (stuff that takes a long time to be expendable, unlike brakes as an example).

Mic

Oh yeah the flex portion! Scratched and little dents but no holes!

With all due respect I posted in the vendors category not the privates wanted category. I had no intention on going used. You reached out to me. That being said, I'm looking for a complete Motordyne system not a Frankindyne system that had to be repaired due to lost parts or a replacment muffler in the midsection from another brand for whatever reason. I'm sure it sounds great but I'm not sure how much more you would expect than half for a pieced together unit. Plus I gotta drive half way to LA? That part I don't mind so much. I like driving. I appreciate the offer but thanks anyway.

Ill have to tend to agree. If its had to have pieces replaced and price is more than half new then id walk.

nothing has been replaced lol

A muffler was added to quite a little and help drone on the freeway. Big difference

And v clamp fell on the freeway so one canister got welded to the mid pipe. But no worries. If i was really wanting to sell Id have an add for it. I want to get rid of it so I can get a Tomie but not a priority. Good luck though! You will love the exhaust once you get one

fwiw, my MD TDX v1 exhaust, rims (2 sets), springs/shocks (TC Kline), kinetix UCAs, 350EVO sways, ST bbk, Cusco LSD, 3.9FD, setrab oil cooler set up, Zspeed under panel, stillen brake brace, Kirk Racing Rollbar, MREV2 + spacer, Pathfinder mod, and maybe more..... were ALL bought here USED. LOLOLOLOL

That's what happens when you're cheap and tried to save a buck or 2 but still want nice parts!

you look at the pics, look at the seller's iTrader ratings, how active this member is (and how he behaves/writes in the forum), you can score good deals on used parts. I know cuz I've done it many times....... of all the deals I made here, I had 1 bad experience with the seller, but that's it (and he was local).

I'd rather buy from here than eBay or CL.......
