Default Same old exhaust question....sort of.

My 07 350Z is pretty much a track car now. Drivetrain is totally stock. After last track day it started making a weird exhaust sound as the RPM's cross 2000. Sounds like a Civic with a fart can. Very brief. Fairly loud.

It can be heard from both exhaust tips and only at rear of car. Assuming it is the muffler. Muffler was bent up after a wreck at VIR several years ago. Muscled it all back into place and everything has been fine until now.

So, I think I need a new muffler.

Not looking for performance gains but if it could sound a little better that would be fine. Not looking for anything that would require a tune. Not looking to replace the whole system.

Z1 Motorsports has a wide range of options but its hard to sort out what is required, what's BS, etc.

Looking for advice on a new muffler, would like to keep it on a budget, would like it to sound better. Anyone with experience on something simple like this?

I see they have a Nismo system that is basically a bolt on replacement with promise of better sound. It is around $900 which is more than I want to spend....but if it was easy to install (should be) and sounded WAY BETTER, I might would pull the trigger on one of those. Would need to hear one first.

Since it is a track car id be going for single...

ISR single if you want bottom of the barrel, fitment isnt perfect but it gets the job done.

Otherwise go with the Z1 single...

Yep. Z1. That is the answer. Not sure how I missed it on their web site.

I think singles are ugly, but at this point in this car's life I don't care. Its been a track car and DD for 5 years. Now its just a track car......and starting to look like one (rode hard) inside and out.

Now for the dopey question: is a tune required to take advantage of better flow or will the OEM tune handle it? (I have no mods on the intake side and don't intend any in the near future)

Or maybe just a gasket, or Y pipe. I'd put the car up on stands and look around. Mine did the same thing, but I had a check engine light too. Turned out an O2 sensor fell out on track. Wires were left behind along with a sensor sized hole in my passenger size cat.

I went with an Indvidia Gemini - it bolts right up (excellent build quality) and sounds pretty good. However it is a full cat back system and not just a muffler.

I've got to do brakes and everything this weekend before Roebling Road next month so I'll get up under there and take a good look. Could be something simple....but it sure would be nice to have an exhaust that sounded good. OEM sounds fine for a daily driver but when my car goes by on the track....the tires make more noise than the exhaust.
