i was "driving" both of the cars on the dyno. the z is mine and the g is a friend's. on the g, the first run was in 4th gear and the second 2 were in 5th. yes, the g hits 160 on the dyno at 7500 rpm in 5th

what has me wondering is why did the z put down more torque when the g has more displacement and the VVEL which is supposed to optimize torque or something like that

i do love how the g's hp doesnt start falling off the way the z's does at about 6750

G37 @ 279whp, assuming 12-17% drivetrain loss, puts crank hp between 317-336. If Nissan/Infiniti's numbers are true @ 330hp, then it should be 15.5% drivetrain loss.

350Z @ 272whp, assuming 12-17% drivetrain loss, puts crank hp between 309-328. If Nissans 306hp is true, then the Z has 11.2%.

Granted its 2 dynos, of 2 different cars, doesn't seem like drivetrain efficiency would vary that much. Maybe the Z is underrated?

Z went from 300 hp to 306 hp from 2006 to 2007. But posted stock 1/4 mile times dropped by roughly .4 secs.... clearly underrated. It's closer to 320 at the crank.

 

Well that has to do with the new SAE rating. The VQ35HR IIRC, is rated around 313-315ps. The VQ37VHR would be rated around 337-345ish. If you convert the 2006s hp figure to the new SAE rating system, it would be like 293ish. What I'm getting at is, if the G37 makes 330 SAE HP, does the Z make 306 SAE HP, or more?

Okay, that would still only be a HP difference of ~13 HP from 06 to 07. In my experience, it takes roughly 7 hp to gain .1 in the 1/4 (in the 12-15 second range). That's a rough number, but it's close. So for .4 seconds the 07 would have to have 28 more HP than the 06 (roughly). So the 07 has to be underrated. It may not quite have 28 more HP, but it definitely has at least 20 more, it has to unless there's a huge difference somewhere else between the cars, like gearing.

don't forget that the Z has a higher rpm and running a quarter mile there are other factors as well,(i.e gears, top rpm and such) so I think your horsepwer per seconds on the quarter mile may differ a little on the HR...

 

That is wrong. I wouldn't say it has 320hp at the crank. The HR has shown to have a much more spacious curve than the previous models. It might have a slight advantage with peak hp, but the majority of the benefit is coming from it's broad curve.

 

I realize there are other factors, as I mentioned. I don't know much about previous model year Z's. I'm assuming that the same differential and tranny are used from 06' to 07'? If so, then regardless of crank power, rpm limit, or power curve, the drivetrain loss is going to be the same percentage as the 06'. So what was the drivetrain loss for a 06'? That should answer the question so long as the drivetrain is the same. As far as I know, it is. Because then you can calculate the crank power from the dyno test numbers using the drivetrain loss. If it has 15% drivetrain loss, then 320 X 15% = 48. 320 - 48 = 272 (which is roughly what the dyno shows).

I agree the G has a slightly better power band up top without falling off, but the numbers are too close to see the worth of the 3.7l engine.

Why bother? Every dyno is gonna read different. You can dyno those 2 same cars at another dyno and have them put out 300+rwhp each. Does that mean all Z's/G's make that much?
A dyno is just a tool to help tuners. Lets not get too caught up in it. My car dyno'd 290/254. If someone asked me how much power I put out, I just shrug and say "im not sure but its rated at 306hp"
