Default Which is more quiet? DE Style vs HR Style Y-pipe

Hey Guys,

wondering if anyone has any input on this.

as most of us know…. There is the DE style y pipe
and the HR style y pipe

Many aftermarket companies have offer Y-pipes in both styles.

For Example:
ISR Y-pipe is shaped like an HR Y-pipe
TOMEI Y-pipe is shaped like DE Y-pipe

i know the HR shape has been proven to be better flow wise. However I’m asking sound wise is there really a big difference?

Rasp? Loudness? Tone? etc etc…

Thanks for your input guys

If everything is equal, flow and sound should be the same. Also, it's not the design that causes the difference in flow, it's the pipe size and merges. The best overall design as proven by Motordyne is the shorter DE style.

By equal you referring to pipe diameter?

I know that motordyne one is a beast. No doubts there.

I just meant as far as my research… everyone says Nissan changed to the HR shape for a reason and people say the reason is it’s a better design.

But honestly when it comes to “flow” you are def right about that. Cuz there are SOOO many factors. There’s not just one pipe the makes the most flow.

anyway I was just curious. Cuz I’m removing my HKS catback because the Resonated test pipes RUINED the sound. (Wish I never did testpipes)

So now I’m going with a Tanabe (Revel) Medallion (single muffler/dual exit) to quiet it down a bit and I’m deciding on which y-pipe to get.

I would get the motordyne resonated y pipe but I just can’t justify spending $800 on y pipe.

2 things:
1. IIRC from MDs R&D the wider Y (HR) yields better HP, and the tighter Y (DE) yields better torque.

Different topic but why would you remove a good exhaust and replace it only because it sounds bad with TP?
Ditch the TP and get HFC, the power difference is near zero.

In summary, if you prioritize a deeper, classic muscle car sound, the HR-style Y-pipe might be yourHowever, if you want a balanced option with good flow and a refined tone, the DE-style Y-pipe is worth considering. Ultimately, personal preference plays a significant role, so it’s essential to listen to both options if possible! 🚗🔊
