I was planning on getting a nismo exhaust real soon, I love the look, the SOUND and the HP gains as a package. BUT I have seemed to notice that others are hinting towards an after market "Y-pipe" producing as much HP gains as the exhaust (the Nismo exhaust includes a Y-pipe as well in the kit). does an aftermarket Y-pipe produce AS MUCH HP as the nismo exhaust/y-pipe, and if so what brand produces such gains? and HOW does it sound?? (in other words if the Nismo Exhaust produces 7 hp and the Y-pipe produces 4-5, and doesn't sound is good, I would still want to go Nismo)

A Y-pipe MIGHT produce a little spike of a gain for more peak advertised power than the NISMO exhaust, but the NISMO makes more across the whole rev band even compared to other full exhausts.

Check Japtrix Y-Pipe + B-Pipe. That combo will give you about the same or slightly more HP (according to their Dyno) than the complete NISMO package. All for ~1/2 the cost of the NISMO.

 

Keep in mind that the NISMO, in addition to providing a Y pipe, is larger than the stock exhaust. A lot of the HP gain is probably coming from that too.

I've been researching exhaust mods lately, since I just got my car and haven't done anything yet.

I looked up Y-Pipes and found out similar information on what was already said about the Japtrix Y- and mid-pipes. Furthermore, there was some knowlegeable source (I'm not sure, but it may have been someone from Performance Nissan) that said that someone inside of Nissan told them that the gains from the Nismo exhaust come almost solely from the Y-pipe.

The guys from the FL Z club that know the Japtrix people reported that Japtrix themselves said all the gains in their dyno testing came solely from their Y-Pipe and Mid-pipe. They were developing their own muffler to go with the Y- and mid-pipes, and found that their freer-flowing (than stock) prototype muffler didn't produce any more HP on the dyno.

I'm currently planning on DC headers, hi-flow cats, Japtrix Y- and mid-pipes - and perhaps keeping the stock exhaust because it doesn't resonate and sounds pretty good already. The aforementioned mods should really bring out some character of th stock exhaust. My bet is that it will sound like the Nismo, but have twice the gains for only slightly more costs of the just the Nismo.

The Japtrix Y/Mid pipe combo looks attractive. What about sound and weight. Anyone know the specs?

 

I read another post about a forum member that helped them with development. He said weight was a wash, as the Y-pipe was approx. 4 pounds heavier than OEM and the mid pipe was approx. 4 pounds lighter (or vice-versa).

I think I recall the comments on the sound of it being a little louder and having a different character (with the stock exhaust), but not as loud as hi-flow cats.

 

I cant see there be much in the way of noticable gains from changing from the nismo Y pipe to another spec unit. I have the Nismo, and the overall package of sound and quality is pretty unbeatable in my opinion. What difference would 3-4 bhp make in the real world, none in my opinion.
Its also great value as a system.

 

I agree that just swapping out the NISMO Y-Pipe for another unit will not make a significant difference. However, for the price/performance ratio, I believe that swapping out the stock Y-Pipe/Midpipe with another unit (ie Japtrix) is probably the best deal compared to the whole NISMO Unit.

 

So what are the advantages of the JIC Y-pipe over the Japtrix? I was just looking at your sig and it looks like your replacing your Japtrix Y
