Default My case study on the short ram vs. CAI

greetings all.
i have the injen CAI on my G35 coupe, and i decided to clean it last night. after taking the extension piece out, that goes into the wheelwell, and taking the filter off, i noticed that it was filthy. i cleaned it off, and dried it (using the tube from my clothesdryer) and went searching for some filter oil. when i realized that i didn't have any, and since it was 10:30pm, i simply put the filter onto the end of the short ram, and left the CAI extension on my bench. my intent is to get some filter oil on my lunch break, and oil it right away, since i didn't want to have to pull the filter out of the wheelwell again. now that you know the background....

....my first impressions are that it is noticeably less torquey. noticeably. as far as top end it might be the same, but torque and throttle response off of the line have diminished. nothing terrible, but i can actually tell. this may help some with their filter/intake selection. many say that the short ram filters give more bang for the buck, and i guess i would agree, but it became blatantly obvious that the long tube CAI's give more torque and throttle response...at least off of the line. it is also quieter too, since i don't have the long tube and wheelwell to use as a resonator.

you can agree, or disagree, i don't care...i just thought that i would share my experience with everyone. i have seen so many dyno sheets, and i don't know what to beleive, but this was a nice real-world test.

what is your take?

Chad

Your impressions may be correct but you must consider one thing... Your ECU has not adjusted fully to the change from cold air to ram air setup. I also have the Injen cold air intake but I have from day one used as a ram air. If I were you I would reset your ECU and then run the car for a month or two on the ram air setup then make your conclusions.

wait a month.........? i am not that patient.

i will most likely install the extension piece tonight. the general rule for torque is long runners, so it wasn't a big surprise.

damn this makes life more complicated again =/...i uninstalled the injen cause i have some odd rattle in the engine bay that i cant figure out so i plan to take it to the dealer, anyway i was going to reinstall as a short ram b.c. i didnt think it was worth the stress of even thinking about hydrolocking the engine..but i didnt kno there would be a noticeable loss of low end

Well correct me if im wrong but the filter on the Injen CAI is WAYYY different from the JWT because it doesnt have the velocity stack thing or whatever youc all it. I mean, when you set up for ram air with the injen filter, the end that faces the air inlet is capped off so only the sides of the filter breathe in the air. Now with a jwt intake you have a big hole for intake in the very front of the filter facing the incoming air, and from research i have read it sounds like this is what causes the good HP increases from the JWT.

Hope that makes sense to you all.

Edit: Hence the people with Injen/JWT hybrid short rams, the filter is better on the jwt for ram air, and they want the looks of the injen tube.

Hmm sounds good, I guess I'll give that a try.
