Unhappy Plenum Problem

I just installed my Crawford Plenum, and when i started the Z, i had really low idle, and a awful high pitched sound coming from the engine... sounded like some kind of a leak. I did not put the new gasket in, i left the stock one in b/c it looked like it was still in good shape. Could that be my problem? And if so, do i put the new gasket that Crawford sent me on top of the existing one, or do i take the old one out and put the new one in? You got to understand, im 18 and i just wanna do all the work on my car on my own.

Chris,

You should put the extra gasket provided by Crawford on. Also, check all your hose attachments, as well as the black nipple in front of the plenum. Review the installation instructions again.

Hope that helps.

take it apart, totally; everything you took apart the first time, take apart again.

then reassemble, with the new gasket(just the new gasket).

if it fixes it, great, if not, come on back, might just have to go to a shop to let them fix it then.

pay special attention to the MAF; if you disconnected that during the install. you dont want to damage that, and you dont want to put it back in backwards or anything.

Default Gasket

You are suppose to use both gaskets!! You probably have an air leak.

Default Crawford plenum........

As mjedens said, you are supposed to use both gaskets with the Crawford. If any doubts, call Doug @ Crawford & he will confirm this.

PS - I'll reply to your PM after work today..........

Like others have said: Use both gaskets. Crank that puppy down tight! Check for rubber nipple on front of plenum.

Make sure you dont have extra bolts leftover. If you do, you probably left out the inside bolts. It causes an air leak and makes some strange noises.

As always the install manuals can be found on the website (http://www.crawfordz.com/support.htm).

Also watch to make sure the rubber around the oil fill cap does not get caught under the plenum. This tends to be a common area for leakage as well.

good job. Always great to see someone attempting to do their own work. Its much more satisfying than paying someone, isn't it? Unfortunately, you will find its a long, expensive ride, as doing elective surgery on your car can be very addicting.

btw, I installed my 5th Z exhaust system today (on a friend's car)

bah the sign of a good install can only be measured by how many parts you have left over.

think of it as weight savings

exactly!!

Except the one I had left over was supposed to go inside the plenum (Version 1 at the time) and I had to take everything apart.

lol

yeah that sucks... The instructions that i had printed off the internet from Crawford was the old plenum, and it took me about 2 secs to figure out why i had 4 bolts and why the older version plenum had more lol
