Question Jacking up car...do I actually need the special blocks?

Yea, need to know if it is completely necessary to have the blocks for properly jacking up and keeping the car on jackstand. I am not new to jacking a car up or anything, but my rx7 did not require anything like this, so any info would be great.

The side jack points include a ridge where body panels come together. To use these points and avoid crushing this ridge, you need some type of blocks.
Many of us bought trolley blocks from JC Whitney, but you could probably make your own out of wood or some other subtsitute.

I just got some hard rubber strips from Lowe's, cut them to size, and then stacked them. Worked like a charm. See pic. You want to support the car without putting any pressure on the side ridges.

Hmm didn't know guys were doing that. It has always frustrated me why jack stands are never setup to properly support the car on the pinch welds found on almost every 90's and up car. My MVP Wal Mart ones are much better than my Craftsman which don't even come close to supporting the pinch weld. There must be a company out there that sells jack stands for pinch welds.

Here is what the package looks like. Go to the home furnishings section (I can't remember). They are used to keep furniture from sliding on hardwood floor.

Go to http://www.norcoind.com/norco/
and check out their jack stands. Under features, it says, "Recessed column saddle for acceptance of vehicle panel rail (model 81004C only). " That's their 3 ton model.

I was asking a friend of mine last night about these, and he mentioned that his friend (who was also the salesperson) said that most people buy the next larger size because it has a larger footprint. 7 1/2" x 7 7/8" vs. 10 1/16 x 11 1/16" That one, unfortunately, doesn't have the slot for the rails.

Thanks! I think the black wheels actually tone down the flashiness of the car.

Default Cheap Jack Adapter for Rails

I have a pair that I made from rubber sanding blocks. These blocks are made from heavy rubber and I cut a quarter inch groove in the face to fit over the jack rails. You can get a small sanding block from Harbor Freight and they work perfect for either floor jacks or jack stands. The arc on the back fits perfectly in my jack stands.

Give them a try and I think you will like them. Cost $2 each at HF.

Slightly off topic but have you guys ever noticed that if you use the front side jack point (not the crossmember point) that both the front and rear wheel will come off the ground? Its handy. Not sure how dangerous it is.
