Question Brand New 2005 6MT Grinds Going into 5th!

ok, i noticed this about a week ago. i've had the car since the 28th of december. i have 1700 miles on it. anytime i am driving at 35+ mph, and i go straight into 5 from any gear it grinds. my friend who has a manual told me that it sounds like something is just lose. i dont know. i can put it into 6th, let the clutch in, go straight to 5th it grinds. if i hold the clutch in, and go to 4th, then back to 5th, it grinds, having the clutch on the floor the whole time. anyone know whats up with that? i've heard of guys having problems with going into 3rd, but that was the 1st or 2nd edition of the tranny. this is really bugging me, i dont want to have my tranny replaced the first month i own this car!!

hmm... I have 2 suggestions:

1. Go to the dealer and have it fixed or

2. set that bizziatch on fire!

My vote is for number 2

Can you shift into the gear if you move the shifter slowly? If so it is probably your synchros and will need to have your trans replaced.

My 05 Enthusiast doesn't have any grinds atm. I have 1,800 on it already and got it mid-December 04.

Time to visit a dealer and get that tranny or syncro replaced.

I had the same problem w/ my 04' G35, right off the lot it was rough getting into 5th. Instead of going back to the dealer like everyone, i just waited it out, and eventually after a few K more miles it went away.

Most people I know that have gotten a replacement tranny end up with other problems. Our trannies suck.

During my recent test drive with a brand new 350z it had a problem with fifth... the car had 67 miles when i took her out. Slammin the gears in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th was smooth... 5th was a pain so i ended up puttin it back into fourth and this was after I slowed her down a bit cause i was coming up to a stop light. Owell... i will for sure yet the extended warranty so now worries.. if it keeps messin up i will ask for another Z

I'm sorry guys, ignore my first post, I was a bit toasted...

Anyway, the only way to find out what is wrong for your tranny is to take it to the dealer and have it looked at. at 1700miles, it may need some more time to settle down and break in.

How hard are you guys shifting these cars? What technique are you using to put it in 5th? Are you going right over from 4th or do you let it out and center then push it all the way to the right and then up into 5th? I gotta believe that some of this is shifting style.

Heh, that's the first thing I thought of, I think if anyone has problems after 04.5's it's from not letting the engine and tranny break-in like they are supposed to be broken-in. Of course, there are a few that may have problems even if they do break it in like it should be. I suggest to do what another member said, wait a little longer and if it doesn't go away, then go get it replaced.

i really dont want to take this thing into the dealership and be without my damn car for 2 weeks. i think i'm just going to wait til i get to around 10k miles, and then if its still grinding, take it in. the grinding isnt bad enough where i cant go into gear. it goes rather easily. but it just barely catches and makes the sound. and about the shifting style, like i said. if i put it to neutral, and then slow into 5th, it doesnt grind. but if it is a direct line from 4th or 6th with not much time to speak of in neutral, it catches. and my dad, who has owned 4 corvettes over his life time, 3 of which were manuals, drove it and had the same problem, the same description. so i'm not sure. i was just wondering if anyone else has the same crap happening. looks like it. thats sad, this is such a GREAT car. i love it more than anything, i just dont see why nissan had to go and put a sh!tty *** trans in it. i need to just save up and get a viper trans put in.

By shifting-style I meant pre-problem.

Transmissions can take longer to break in than engines.

On my SpecV, it took about 5000 miles to break in the transmission.

The way you drive I suggest getting like royal purple tranny fluid, or some performance oriented tranny fluid.

From experience, avoid RP in your trans , RP uses friction modifiers which will make your syncros un-happy when cold. For a track only car it's great though, and its great in the diff.

Redline MTl/MT90 are great for the 6MT , no modifiers and hence better cold sychro operation.
