Default How important is it to do a head job if you have blown piston rings?

I know that it's highly recommended to do a head job if you have to remove your piston rings to replace it. But why is it so very important. I have a buddy that needs to replace his piston rings but don't have the money to do the head job at the same time. Any input would greatly be appreciated.
