Tranny Replacement in 03' models with Short Shifters.
today i went into Nissan to get my right rear axle replaced for the clicking noise that most 2003 models have. i had my left replaced about two months ago. Prior to this i had complained on one occasion that my tranny seemed unusually notchy and would grind nearly every time during my "spirit" driving. well today when i went it, i asked to take the factory rep for a drive to show him the grinding. he said he would go but that he would be driving.
He hops in, me in the passenger seat and drives less the 500 ft down the road and returns to the garage bay to check the date of which my car was produced. while he was driving he noticed my B/M complimented it and said nothing else. also he didnt notice any grinding in second (of course not, he didnt take it to the red line, highest he went was 3k rpms, so no grinding occured). when he checked the date and VIN he began to tell me how 04' models and new had substantial changes made to the tranny. i knew this of course because my brother has an 04' and shifting it feels like butter. whereas mine feels like marbles are in the tranny, even with the Royal Purple Syn tranny fluid. He then began to tell me that he was going to replace the tranny and suggested, since my car has 24k miles on it, i buy a new clutch from Nissan or another clutch in general. He also said my car was going to be outfitted with an up to date tranny. I asked if it were an update or refurbished 03' tranny, he said no, a brand new 05' tranny will be order and installed.
Naples Nissan has had nothing but rants and raves from me with their warranty department. The fact of the matter is, they are replacing my tranny regaurdless of grinding because the changes are so substantial. I was very please none the less.
Currently these are the following warranties agaist my car:
Front Tires- Replaced 2 times
Right Axle- Replaced 1 time
Left Axle - Replaced 1 time
Driver Seat- Replaced 2 times
Passenger Seat- Replaced 2 times
Driver Seat Rail- Replaced 2 times
Tranny- Replaced 1 time
Driver Window Motor- Replaced 1 time
I guess you could say, I'm a regular in the Nissan Warranty Department. Anyhow i thought i would share this with you all. I was surprised to find that even with the SS they would still warranty my tranny. Thats shows a company standing behind what they sell and say.
Having said that i have to ask the inevitable question, what clutch should i install? now im going to be needing a new fly and pressure plate i assume, right? i want something streetable yet i dont want to be changing a clutch in the future when i boost. suugestion on a complete package would be appreciated btw.
btw: how much does a new clutch/fly/pressure plate combo cost from nissan?
Nismo?
JWT?
ACT?
thanks,
john

Has any of this work been done using the purchased extended warranty?
My 03' has 36K miles. I took delivery in 12/02. I had the dealer check it a year ago for the 3rd gear grinding. They could not recreate the problem and did nothing.
Now my tranny rattles in neutral and grinding into 3rd gear has gotten worse. I purchased the 100K extended warranty insurance but have never used it.
Just wondering if I should expect problems when I go in to see the dealer.

nope. i currently have 26k on my ride. got 10k left. its depends on dealer. maybe you might want to consider that the tranny is grinding due to human error. also that rattle, how can u tell its not the clutch rattle?
