Default timing chain on the z

Do we need to have the timiing chain change every 70 k?

My z is about 2 years and it is now up to 56 k miles.

Can anyone confirm if we need to have it look into or change?

Thx again...

i have never changed it on my maximas (126,000 and 70,000 miles). there is no real point from what i gather, until it starts making a lot of noise. you can have someone check it out for slack, play and what not, but until it starts to get noisy, i wouldn't worry....this is the advice from my friend who is a nissan tech, so take it for what it is worth. it is your car after all, and if you feel like spending almost a grand to change it, then go for it if it will ease your mind.

that was the great thing about the mr2, it was a non-interference engine, so if the timing belt broke, it would break or bend anything.

Im getting the clanking noise from the front cover..No biggie its timeing chain slap. There is a TSB out relating to the tensioner. The tensioner is hydralic and uses the oil pressure to tension the timing chain at idle. I belieive the fix is adding a gasket under the tensioner so oil pressure can not bleed off causing slack..It can be accessed from the little black cover on the front of the timing chain cover..

Timing chains are not scheduled replacement items. The old rubber timing belts were. Some cars that have the old timing belts were free-wheeling and wouldn't hurt the engine if the belt broke, and others would tear the engine up if they broke. We're lucky that we don't have to go through timing belt changes. I sold my '96 300ZX TT before the 60 KMi were up and didn't have to do it, but the horror stories I heard were that it was 11 hours of labor just to tear that engine apart to get to the timing belt. Most people who had the 300's had a whole list of parts that should be changed at 60 KMi when you had it all apart if you planned on keeping it for a while.

in other words, we dont need to worry about timing belt, 350z uses timing chain.
Am I correct ?
