Angry Windshied Chip Repair

So yesterday I got a chip on my windshield near passenger side, while driving on the freeway. Damn was I mad...so I had a repair guy come to fix it today.
Now....when he came, it was still a chip, maybe nickle size or less. He did something, and boom all of a sudden there is now a 5 " crack? WTF? He said it was a compressed crack and that we just couldn't see it, but it would have showed up sooner or later. I was not there at the time because I had to work, so the car was with my girlfriend.

Ok my question is...has anyone heard of this? Is he telling the truth or is he juts pulling my legs....Arggggg car only has 2k miles on it too. If anyone has experience with windows crack or repair, please share. Thanks.

most any chip in the windshield will develop into a crack sooner or later. from you are saying i think he was refering to the fact that the chip had already begun to develop the crack and whatever he did just kinda accelerated it.

even though from what you are describing it should still be repairable. i had this also and what they can do is fill it in with some liquid glass stuff taht will work fine. with mine the guy said that the rule of thumb is anything around the size and length of a dollar bill is repairable (free with my insurance). anything bigger than that and the windshield has to be replaced.

price on that 300-500 bucks i think. dunno cause i was able to repair.

good luck

Thanks for your input. Yeah hes actually repairing it now and the crack will be less noticeble. Still i would rather have no line then one that is fainted. I guess Im thinking maybe he did this either on purpose, or was careless, but then using the excuse that it was 'compressed' crack, bounding to show up sooner or later, with the chip fixed or not.

if you dont have it now, switch your insurance over to 0 dollar deductible on comprehensive. then when you get the next crack or chip let it get bigger than the dollar limit size and your comprehensive insurance should cover for a windshield replacement. thats what i have done and go figure i have gone a year now crack/chip free.
