Default Strange Shifting in My Z

Hello,

I have about 1500 miles on my Z, and have noticed it shifts strangely. In every standard car I have driven (including an old Z) shifting from 3rd and pushing down would naturally go into 4th,
from 5th I would expect it to naturally go into 6th gear.

However my Z does not work like that, pushing
the shifter in 3rd down naturally goes into 2nd,
and from 5th it goes down to 4th. I have to finesse it from 3rd to 4th (it is also a rough feeling shift).

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Besides this and the stereo I love the car.

Thanks,

Jot

I don't have the 3rd to 2nd problem you have, but I certainly have the 5th to 4th problem. The shifter just seems to naturally want to fall into 4th from 5th, I always have to conciously make sure that the shifter is all the way over. I think this may be something that Nissan should look into.

well its rest position is for 3-4 so from 5th to 6th it will want to come back to 3rd. but I find it doesnt pull hard, but you do have to pull straight back, you have to be sure in both shifts not to pull towards you.

that would be my guess as to your problem, you becoming more comfortable with it and arent concentrating on pulling straight back.

Hello,

Thanks for the responses. It very well could be my technique, but I would say I've driven at least 6 other standard cars for over 500km at least without ever experiencing this.

I am getting it looked at on Monday. I obviously can get it into a higher gear, but it requires a conscious shift, that kind of shifting should only occur on a downshift.

i was just wondering..

did u ever drive a manual tranny with 6 gears??

i guess this really doesn't matter but i think the spacing between the gears might just be tiny bit closer to each other than your regular 5 speed... just tiny bit...

or maybe not..

but roll your wrist!! =)

I have noticed the same thing. I have been driving 5 speeds for many years, most currently a 2000 Civic Si (now sold). When I test drove a Z back in September, I drove off slowly and just started going through the gears to get the feel of the shift - kind of an initial test. When I went from 3rd to 4th - or so I thought - it came back into 2nd. Luckily I wasn't going very fast at all. I didn't think much about it until your thread.

Maybe it does shift slightly different than the average 5 speed. Time will tell.

No, I've never driven a 6 speed or a super short throw shift before, but I have driven other manual sport cars. However I am convinced something is up, sometimes I have to try getting into 4th from 3rd a few times, and it always feel rough in comparision to any other shift.

I appreciate everyone's thought's, I am now thinking it is a service issue. When it gets looked at next week I 'll post a update.

My technique when shifting is normal hand position ("thumbs up") from 1st to 2nd. From 2nd to 3rd and so forth, i invert my hand ("thumbs down") so that i have the tendency to push away instead of pulling in. This is especially important when shifting from 3rd to 4th, which can cause a miss shift to 2nd. Just my way of shifting...
