shifting questions
hey guys
my dad recently got his 350z touring about 2 months ago. im not an expert stick driver but ive been practicing lately. when i first drove the Z about a month ago i had problems with the 1-2 shift, it wasnt smooth. but i noticed today that the 1-2 was decent but i had trouble from 2-3. it was my understanding that the stick should have a natural feel to which gear to go into next? also i accidently mis shifted from 3-4 i went 3-2 luckly it was just normal cruising speed, but what i dont understand is how i got it into second, naturally the stick would move down but for some reason i pulled it into 2nd.
does anyone know if the Z gear box has some sort of locking mechanism when you get pass a certain speed, so you cant put into a certain gear at a higher speed? im afraid to drive the Z cause i dont want to blow the motor or anything.
can someone give me any pointers for avoiding mis shifts?

Hey grats on learning to drive the finer of the 2 types of trannies. Well some pointers on shifting is that the shifter will go any where you want it to when the clutch is depressed, so a little feel is involved. The best is to just sit there in a driveway and kind of feel your way though the gears, 1-6 and back to 1. Do that for a bit, get a feel of where each gear is. What I've felt in the Z is that 1-2 is a little bit of a pull, 3-4 is neutral, and 5-6 involves a little bit of a push. Treat it like a fine woman, Caress it, don't man-handle and jostle it around. Be smooth and it will treat you right. You'll get it soon.
As for your 3-2 downshift instead of 3-4 up shift, I bet you were tugging a little to aggressively and pulling the shifter back towards you.

also how bad is it to keep the clutch down for longer than a few seconds. like when you are in traffic and you dont fully engage the clutch, just like you are in reverse. not for like a minute but like 8-10 seconds? also is it bad when you are going up hill too? and i notice i have to do this to park it in the garage, is this how its done or am i suppose to completely engage the clutch and just use my braking control?
how the heck do you guys drive on the twisties with a manual transmission. i mean your body is moving side to side and so will your hand and i could see a possible mis shift from that too.
