Angry oh this is wack...warranty issues.

ok so i just bought my car from a private sale. The car is a 2003 350z. it only has 12,400 miles on it. i bought the car last week and just yesterday i noticed a problem with the driver side window. for some reason it locks up sometimes and i can't open it. right now it still won't open. so i went to nissan dealership and they looked up the vin # on the computer. they said the car was purchased on 12/7/2002 and that the 3 years warranty is up on it and that they won't cover it. What the ****? The car ONLY has 12,000 miles on it so it has BARELY been used which should mean that the part is obviously defective or bad to begin with and not because of wear and tear. any one have any ideas of what i can do? The tech told me it would cost $350.00 to fix the problem and i really don't want to spend that much on a problem that seems to be a defect.

The warranty is for 36,000 miles or 36 months in service whichever comes first. The answer is obvious.

The mileage does not really show how much the windows have been used. I had my Z just under a year and racked up close to 30,000 miles. I probably only rolled down the windows a handfull of times. However, this guy/girl may have rolled down the windows every time the car was driven.

+1. The 36 months has passed. It really stinks how the warranty works on cars, electronics, etc.. That 36,000 miles is not just a number thrown out to make the warranty sound good. Studies, stats, and past performances, reflect that is exactly how much life you should get out of your product. If you buy a cell phone, which mostly come with a 1 yr warranty, the maker of the phone wants you to use that phone as close to 1 year as possible! If you get 2 years out of it, guess what, they gave you too much for your money. Car makers also, don't want you to get too much for your money. They want, and know, things will break and need replacement very close to warranty expiration.

+1. You can bet a corporation the size of Nissan does Mean Time Between Failure studies. Very similar to extended warranties: the probability that the car will fail within the extended warranty period is not in your favor.

well i just made a call to nissan consumer affairs and let them know my problem. the lady was very nice and helpful. she understood that the warranty was past but she also said that the car has very low mileage and that they do tend to help consumers out on a case by case basis when they are out of warranty. plus she asked if this was my first nissan. i told her yes and that the 3 previous vehicles were honda and that i had no problems with their car at all. so i'll have to wait for a phone call this week to see what will happen. i'll keep you guys posted.
