after discussing in some depth with an Amsoil representative i am slightly confused as to what oil to use....

I am 200 miles from my First oil change at 2,800 miles and i want to do this right.. i have heard many different things about FULL synthetic oils being MUCH better for our Z's in terms of less oil consumption, better gas milage and small other fine details....

is Amsoil one of the only TRUE FULL synthetic oils? i was told this by the Amsoil rep... he said that Mobil and Castrol syntec were not real synthetics but regular oil refined more, with synthetic additives... *sorry if i word anything wrong, as i am going from hearsay from a sales rep*

Amsoil supposedly can be run 25,000-35,000 miles on a single oil change, and they now have a new Filter for the Z that can run up to 15,000-25,000 miles
is this Correct? safe for the Z? i spoke with a mechanic *not from Nissan* who said it didnt matter what oil you used you should change it at 3,000 miles

is he correct? or just stuck in that 3,000 mile hype that the oil companies have been pushing on us since the 70's

I used mobil 1 on my new prelude and I believe it may of made the engine burn some oil between oil changes. That is making me to use dino oil for my 06 z.

I think mobil's website says mobil 1 is full synthethic.

 

Oil change intervals are not based on the type of motor oil that you use, but the severity of driving conditions. One example is the short commute. A short commute does not allow the engine to reach operating temperature before you shut it down. In this situation, more frequent intervals are necessary.

The regular vs synthetic motor oil debate will go on forever. I have seen only one objective comparison done years ago by Consumer Reports. Synthetic motor oil has benefits in extreme situations. Those are primarily cold and hot conditions. If I drove in North Dakota or Arizona, synthetic would be a must. Also synthetic and racing go hand-and-hand.

 

I am moving to Dallas Texas in MAY... i am going to take the wild guess that that would be an extreme Temp area

also most of my driving is short trips... 5-10 min each way... enought time for engine to get to mid of temp gauge before i cut it off.

i do let car idle for 30 seconds from start up and i *try* to not rev more than 3,500 rpm until temp is in middle of gauge

Mobil 1 is 100% synthetic. Not a blend. The Amsoil guy has no idea what he is talking about.

castrol has 1 oil that is part synthetic and another that is full synthetic. I would imagine that if a oil company advertized oil to be synthetic and it wasn't it would open them up to lawsuits.

 

from what i was told there is/was a lawsuit over the true physicality of oils being synthetic.... i am going to see if i can find info about it

I use Silkolene in my ZR after using it in my bike. You can actually feel the difference. The engine runs smoother and cooler. It dropped temps about 8 degrees on my Yamaha. It's not cheap, but if you want the best you gotta pay.-

I have used all 3, but recently bought a case of Royal Purple. The engine seems to run smoother with Royal Purple and less consumption as well.

you like Royal Purple better than Amsoil??? do you have any technical data on it? website or the like?

did you get any better gas milage? what exactly do you mean by the engine runs smoother?

 

I do not know about Amsoil much, but I know Motul oils true ester based synthetic oil.

I heard that Castrol was dragged through the courts in USA for selling semi-synthetics as full synthetics. The judge ruled Castrol could continue to sell its oils as sythetic as it was modifying the mineral oils enough to justify it.

 

sorry no technical data, but my car is holding 19.5mpg vs. 18 mpg when I had Amsoil or Mobile 1. The engine is noticably smoother, but I don't know about HP gain from what the site claims. I check the oil level every 500 miles and I didn't have to add any with using Royal Purple. http://www.royalpurple.com/

I was told by my oil guru that Royal Purple is heard about so much because it's given free to racers. They change their formula so frequently that it's kind of garbage. That's just what this 65 yO guy told me who's been in the business for 50 years. He even calls up the chemists at the different labs to get the low down on all the new stuff. When I was looking at synthetics, he said he could sell me Mobil 1, but that Torco SR-1 was better and less expensive. I asked about Amsoil, and he said the product was good and better than Mobil 1, but he'd still go with the Torco...so I've been running the SR-1 for the past year and a half. No problems, but I don't know of anyone else running it.

Your comparing different weight oils. If you compare oils of the same weight (5W-40). Silkolene has the better numbers.-

All I know is I'm sold on Silkolene after seeing how well it worked in my bike. I was originally turned on to it by a guy that races street bikes and he swears by it too. They make special formulations for bikes too.-

As the responses to this thread demonstrate, the motor oil debate is full of misinformation and unsubstantiated claims.

For the types of driving most of us do most of the time, any well known name brand conventional or synthetic oil will work just fine. What is most important is to change it at least as often as the carmaker specifies, and of course to use a new name brand filter each time.

 

Very true. None of these oils are really going to make that big of a difference. If you're really looking for something that you can go 10k miles with so you can save money by not changing your oil, then maybe you need to look at a different car

 

You know what they say opinions are like... everybody has one. Personally, I know what works for my bike & car and makes them run cooler. Heat is an enemy in engines, robbing performance and reliability and if using synthetic is going to help, thats good enough for me.
