I have a 3 yr old coupe with 50K miles. The windshield weatherstripping is comprised of several pieces. The ones of concern are in the four "corners". They appear to be more rubber like than plastic as the longer pieces. They are virtually decomposing, especially the two bottom pieces that actually show gaping holes.

I looked at an '06 model and it has a revised weatherstrip that is one piece. This tells me that they modified it to improve on a bad design. Anyone try to fix under warranty or complaint to NNA? Any TSBs on it?

i tried to get it fixed under warranty and the dealership claimed it's not a warranty item. i wasn't able to try and take it to another dealship since i had to get the car ready to be stored since im gone for a while. but the dealership i took it to has been good about all the other 03 problems, so i take it that other dealerships would have given me the same answer.

so i'm just sol. eventually the windshield will just get a crack in it and it will be replaced by florida dept of transportation, along with the seals...

 

 

Have you used any type of protectant on it before (example: armor all) ?

Yes, on occasions when I'm detailing the car, but I'm certainly not religious about Armor All every time I wash it. It's driven year round in central Texas, but it has always been garaged at home.

 

bumping this b/c my windshield rubber trim looks way worse than this and I've good care of it with 303 protectant. anyone else have this problem or do any of the sponsors know how much the replacement for these pieces of crap are? can we use the "revised" trim?

 

I've noticied the same problem on my '03.
I don't think trim and weather stripping are covered beyond the 1yr/ 12K-mile comprehensive warranty period.

the little corner pieces have been damaged by a buffer (i did this same damage to my 03 with my porter cable buffer) when waxing or buffing.mask them off next time .

 

I'm not certain about old-style Armor-All destroying weather stripping, but I know that it will screw up an interior something awful.

I use 303 Aerospace Protectant on all weather stripping on my Z. That's exactly what it's designed to do - protect against it drying out and disintegrating.

 

I've never used a buffer/porter cable on my Z and I touch up my interior/exterior with 303 aerospace protectant about twice a month so I'm not sure how this happened so quickly. its so thin I can see into the firewall area on the bottom corners.

 

I know this is an old thread, but the four corners of the windshield weather stripping has also disintegrated. Does anyone have a part number for these? Also, is it possible to do the install yourself?

I can see a pro would be required for windshield replacement, but what about just the seals on the 4 corners.

Its a tricky situation. Does the windshield leak water? No. Leave it alone.

If it bothers you - take it to a professional. A shop will guarantee their work.

The result of a do-it-yourself job may be worse than what you started with.

 

Iv replaced a lot of weatherstripping and all of the different designs are tricky. Door/hatchback stripping is the easiest, next is the window "wipers" on the door panels and most dificult is the Front/rear Glass.

You live in Texas---the sun beats it to death, I use a little dielectric grease on side window surrounds and Hatchs to keep it from sticking to the metal. Main thing is, keep it out of the sun

 

The weather stripping on my 1997 Eclispe dry rotted also. I went to the dealership and purchased the stripping, then replaced it myself. It was a tedious task, but worth it IMO....

 

It doesn't leak now, but I do think the upper 2 corners are beginning to cause a bit of wind noise at speed. Would using black caulk or some type of liquid latex to fill the gaps (just to reduce the wind noise) be advisable?

Same problem as those above... I would talking to a shop tomorrow about getting my bushings and suspension installed... Hopefully I'll see if something can be done.

 

I have an 04 350Z and just went to the auto glass place in town for the same thing-the rubber trim, mainly on the bottom corner. The guy came out and looked at it, then he called the Nissan dealer in town to check out the price for the parts. Well, you have to get one complete side-can't get just the rubber parts. For ONE SIDE it was $475! You'd think they would be trying to get rid of the parts for an older car...apparently not. Also, he said these pieces were cosmetic and that the windshield shouldn't leak even with the deterioration.
