Default trouble reading oil level

OK, don't give me too much crap, but reading the oil level is next to impossible. I wait the obligatory 10 minutes. But when I pull the dip stick out to read the oil level, either I have 10 gallons of oil, or it's dragging oil from the tube and putting it all over the stick. I tried waiting 20 to 30 minutes, but not until I waited over an hour was apparent that the level was OK. Is there a trick to this, am I missing something? I've been checking my own oil for too many years to mention, but this thing is not working for me. Any advice?

PS, I took it to the dealer and they were having the same trouble. Oil is coated all over that thing, 2 and 3 lengths higher than the score marks, even 20 minutes later. We looked at a car that had been sitting in the show room and it was very easy to tell the level, but that car hadn't been driven for a week.

Default Stupid Design

Yes you are right. It is near impossible. If you wipe it off and be careful pulling it in and out, you can sort of tell where the oil is thicker on the stick... Also, be careful when putting it back in because the 2nd or 3rd time I did, the stupid metal guide for it fell off. The dealer had to put it back on....

That dipstick is crazy! I couldn't believe it the first time I pulled it out. And even when you pull it out nice and slow, it has that last bend at the tip that twangs it when it comes out, making it really hard to read the true level.

Cool

same with me....i changed my oil today because i passed my 1200 mile breakin period and was trying to read the dipstick and it was very impossible. there was oil on every part of the dipstick. i just looked on the manual and it said use 5 quarts if you change out the oil filter. so, that's what i did!

you don't have to, but it's recommended. i've read on other forums and other people's experiences. since the car is brand new, there are alot of sharp edges and sharp parts in the engine and during the breakin period, the engine wares down and rounds off the sharps edges. as it does that, there are deposits and filings in your oil. so it is recommended to change your oil as soon as you're done with your breakin. after that, then it's your standard oil change after every 3000-3500 miles. i've read that someone even changed their oil at 500 miles and then again at 1200 miles. i thought 500 was too early and that 1200 was sufficient enough so that the engine was broken in and the engine parts was filed down without anymore sharp edges.
