Default Notchy Shift Problem on 6MT SOLVED.

Replaced the oil in my DB Track 6MT with 50/50 mix of Redline MTL and MT-90.

Two hundred miles later, notchy shifting is GONE.

It shifts like silk now.

Also replaced the differential oil with Redline 75W90.

Worth the $120 (Larbor included) investment.

Sounds interesting. Has anyone else done this that can confirm a smoother shift?

Many have done it, and many more will follow

For your reference:

MT - 50/50 MTL & MT-90 3.5qts total
Differential - 75W90 1.8qts total

The other option is to use Shockproof SuperLight, I've heard. I think Vandy Z and maybe others here in Nashville have gone to that.

I have heard from more than one sources (RedLine Tech. was one) that the Shockproof is only for racing not for the normal stop and go daily driving.

How is this bad?

The reason we use shockproof is because it is the only thing Dougrace zs and the guys at Sunbelt Performance have found that prevent synchro damage. A bad problem. Clearly whatever Nissan uses from factory is not adequate . . . especially when cold.

I don’t know how others perform but there were plenty of testing and racing that proved to them Shockproof is what to use. Dougrace zs knows Z's like Bo knows *whatever*. He races, fixes, owns and drives Z's. I trust him over a redline sales tech.

Anyway, i think most anything is better than what Nissan uses.

You are right VandyZ, ShockProof is better than MTL/MTL-90, but the thing is it's not approved by mfg.

MTL & MT-90 are GL-4 rated, ShockProof does not. I am just worry that incase there are transmission problems, NISSAN will not warranty it because of a unrated tranny oil.

I was using Lightweight ShockProof but because of my conscious, I switched to MTL/MT-90 GL-4 rated oil even though ShockProof is suppose to be better performance than MTL/MT-90 oil.

So to sum it up:

If you want to play it safe, then get MTL/MT-90.

If you want all out racing performance, you may try ShockProof.

Default Sorry for the newbie question...

How/where to get these products?

I don't think regular oil change place would have these in stock...

A link to online source would be appreciated...

May want to check the Redline URL (above). However, I didn't get it from one of their dealer but instead, I got it from a dealer that gave me a good discount because of my affiliation with the BMW Club.

The street price for a MTL, MT-90 and 75w90 is between $6.50 and $8.00 per quart/bottle.

Why did it cost $120? Probably a stupid question but, is there a lot of labor involved?

Cost of labor is $70. 'Beats crawling under the car with jack stands.

The procedure to chage the oil on the MT and Diff. is pretty straight forward, just like any other car. The drain and intake plugs is very accessible, especially when the car is hoisted above you.

Got several good observations of the under body structures. The Stillen exhaust would fit very nicely. Wierd narrow twistie snake-like rear sway bar. The Carbon Fiber Plastic reinforced drive shaft looks brittle but I heard and read it's very strong, we'll see.

Hmmm....
I installed MT-90 (not a mix) about 2K miles ago. It made a little difference, but the tranny is still quite notchy, expecially when cold. Is it worth trying the mix, or is my tranny just plain notchy?

Mika, no sense of wasting $$ to replace the MT-90 right away. You may want to consider replacing it with the mix on the next maint.

By the way, thanks for the info. on the quantity of oil needed for the Tranny and Diff. in the other forum. It was right on.

Default Proportions

What is the mix ratio/proportion? How much MTL per qt of MT-90 (or vice-versa)? Also, did the dealer do the change or an independent shop? Thanks!

Redline recommends 50% MT-90, 50% MTL. (1qt-1qt).
I had a nissan dealer install my MT-90. It's a 1/2 hour job, and most dealers charge around $80/hour.

I had an independent shop do the work. The dealer would have done the work but they did not have the pump to pump the oil directly from the bottles. They only have the oil dispensing system built into their shop that uses the Nissan oil only.

Another words, I have to bring my own $5 pump for them to do the work which they did not mention prior to my visit. An indication that the Service Advisor does not have any clue about their own operation (I made sure this was noted in the service assesment questionaire from Nissan.)
