From that simple description of the problem, it's virtually impossible for someone to diagnose the cause and suggest an course of action.

If you search the site, you will find numerous posts on the subject of transmission grinding, especially 3rd gear.

Since you didn't mention year and mileage, I can only guess if you're under warranty. If you are, I'd suggest taking it back to the dealer. Let them figure out if it's clutch or transmission.

Some people who have had their transmission replaced under warranty, have chosen to have the clutch replaced at their own expense while the transmission was off the car. It save a few bucks in labor and gives you the opportunity to do a clutch upgrade or install a lightweight flywheel. Again, your friend the Search feature can enlighten you on that subject too.

BTW, at the top of this forum (Repairing) is a sticky post titled "Post here only if you have had your TRANNY replaced." That's a good starting place.

i have done alot of searches and have even taken it to nissan but i have 30600 on the car and they said if it was still under warranty they will replace it but they have to take tranny apart to find out problem and if they see any misuse or abuse to the clutch they will not warrant it and will charge me for tear down time. and i know whoever had it b4 me didnt treat it to good
