Hey I removed my strut bar today to install my grounding kit and intake and when I put it back on I stripped one of the hole a little bit. Its enough to where the bolt won't grab. I did a little to the bolt too, but I can get another one of those. Do you think rethreading the hole and trying to fix/cut or replace the bolt would work. And will it be ok until I can do that?? Its not loose or anything, its still bolted in 7 out of the 8 spots.

 

Depends on how much of the thread got trashed. one or two threads and a longer, stronger bolt may be able to work that out. Anymore and you would probably be better off rethreading for safety. Did you torque that bad boy in crooked all the way down? or realize your error and back it out?

I did the second myself when I installed my spacer. Worked it out with a longer bolt. The ones included in the kit wouldnt fit the holes though. wayyyy to big

 

No I realized it a little before half way. I'm goin to try to fix it thursday.

 

Twice now when installing spacers or Removing struts my owners/"helpers" have stripped them --Take it off --loosin ur adjusting nut so u dont repeat---Get a new bolt and run a tap ---10 X 1.25. ALWAYS start all bolts before tightening

 

Would I have to get the nut from nissan, or can I get it from a hardware store or something??

 

Same thing happen to me....... get the bolt from nissan. I just rethreaded mine.

 

I have a couple dozen laying around ---Its a VERY common size on the Z---But for a match ,Yes Nissan ----It has a built in "washer" ---If ur no slave to fashon ---Then go to Napa or someplace like that

 

Are you sure its the hole thats stripped? Try re-arranging the bolts to different threads.

I had to remove my strut brace, and I thought I stripped the hole, but it turns out it was just the bolt(thank god). Go to Nissan Parts and get a new one for $1-2.

 

hey guys i realized this same shlt happened to me when my supercharger was installed.... like 3 of my bolts were stripped.. I bought new bolts and one still doesnt thread in.. the other two did good.. im just pissed now.. everytime i open the hood i need this thing at perfection@!!! l

i think im gonna buy the bolts from nissan this time.. i got 6 hot bolts from oreilly.. but im gonna try 6 stockers..

 

The job should be done properly. Tap the threads.

 

If you just buggered a few threads, you'll probably be fine after chasing the threads with the right tap. You should use a thread-chasing tap like those available from ARP (Automotive Racing Products, Oxnard, CA 800/826-3045, 805/278-RACE (7223) www.arp-bolts.com). Any of the standard taps (plug, taper, bottom) will cut more metal from the threads every time you pass it, and the resulting bolt/thread combo may not hold the spec'ed torque. In the "old days", we only used old taps that were dull to chase threads.

Make sure you hold the tap wrench straight so the tap is coaxial with the hole. If you let it wobble while you turn it, the hole will become oval in cross-section and the bolt will not hold torque as well. It's also harder to get an anaerobic sealant (e.g. LockTite) to hold in an oval hole - there's too much space between the threads along the long axis of the oval.

Use a torque wrench. If you don't get the proper "snap" at the rated torque (or you can't get the needle to stay on the rated setting, for that style torque wrench), you'll have to overdrill and tap it for a TimeSert. I stopped using Helicoils years ago - TimeSerts have a flanged top rim and seat firmly in the hole (which is cut with a chamfer if you use their drill bit).

Do it right - every time you do it wrong, you make it harder to fix.

 

what do u need to 'tap the threads'. I ****ed up 1 on each side also. The one thats at an odd angle. I wanna fix it, but im not sure how to.

 

I stripped on of the holes too. How easy is it to tap the thread and what tools do I need?
