GOOD LUCK!
Why would they ask you to hold off, and why would you agree?

Good question. Unlike Todd350ZX, it does not happen often nor does it cause me to be unable to drive aggressively. So I'm just getting what I can out of this powertrain / clutch (which will also need replaced after all the grinding), then moving on to the next one. Since the dealer said it would likely do the same thing it didn't seem to make much difference to change it out now or at max use.

Check out the powertrain complaints here:
http://www.mycarstats.com/safetystat...p?cars=2421902
or just mycarstats.com and enter your 03' Z info to get to safetystation
You'll have to sign up, but it is a GREAT website and worth putting all your cars on it to track issues over time. I had my 95' 240SX on it and now have my 03' Murano on it in addition to the Z

I went there last week on thursday I think. Then they ordered the tranny when they found out that was the problem. So they asked me if I wanted to pick up my car for the weekend and I would bring it back on this tuesday, so I did and it has been there for 2 days so far.

I will pick my car up tomorrow morning at like 11:00 AM.

I am kind of excited because ever since I've had my car it has always grinded into 3rd no matter what. So this is going to be the first time I can get up on it and really go through the gears.

So do trannys from the 04, 05 or even 06 work in the 03? Damn, this is good to know. i'll prolly have to replace my tranny in the next 20K? I'm sure it's the syncros.

I put in synthetic tranny fluid and it made a world of difference with 3rd.

As everyone else said; 3rd-Gear synchro guarenteed. Take her in.

Had mine replaced at 35k for free.

Oh yeah, PS, I'd take her in ASAP if you are under warranty. People have been known to have the problem with 2, 3, or even 4 trannies. Don't wait until your milage is about to run out...

Oh yeah, I agree. But I was thinking that I could pay extra and get a 04, 05 or 06 tranny. Will those trannys work in my 03?

No dude. You'll get the latest available trans for your '03 (which is version 009). You will not have to pay for it unless you're out of warranty.

As for downshifting into 1st. It'll grind if you force it unless you're almost at a complete stop. You can shift into 1st at any speed 35 mph or less if you correctly revmatch. I've went into 1st @ 20mph w/out problems.
Not saying you should do this, but you can, although not recommended. 1st is just to get the ride moving

My 2003 had a 5th gear grind at ~50,000miles and the dealer replaced it with a new one a week before I bought it. They said (without me asking) that it was a big problem for a lot of 350Z's and this newer transmission is a revised model so it's unlikely it will happen again.

It too has a warranty

When your guys first experienced a grind, did it occur at normal shifting, or only when quickly shifting through gears at high RPM (as if you're racing someone)?

I've read that they put another '03 tranny in there and you get the same problem again down the road.
