Question Where does one hook up an electric oil temp guage?

Maybe a Maxima owner can help. I KNOW that the BEST place to measure the oil temp is in the oil pan, but I'm not into removing it and welding in a fitting. Is there another recommended place to read the temp? Is there a way to get a reading from it's computer?

HELP!

If the Z has an oil cooler I would instrument just before it. The peak temperature is what degrades your oil the most.

Actually, the temperature at the bottom of the oil pan will respond rather slowly to changes in load and speed. I once built and qualified a 700 BHP diesel tank engine to NATO requirements. We could not meet their oil temp requirement with our stock oil cooler and could not get a better one within the time constraint. So we put an extra deep oil pan on the engine with the thermocouple at the bottom of the pan. The oil circulating through the engine was not any cooler but the readout we showed the NATO inspector stayed well below the limit. This was an extreme case but the principal is the same.

Thanks for the response! NATO! From my limited data base, the oil in the oil pan is at the temp that is drawn into the oil pump, feeding the engine. My race car engine builder recommended this as the best place to monitor the temp.

BUT, back to my question, where can I plug a wire into the Z to read oil temp?

Another bump........

With all the racers here, I would think SOMEONE would have installed an oil temp guage by now.

Default Yes, oil cooler would okay

According to service manual, the car has an oil cooler that taps oil at the base of the oil filter. But this oil cooler is water based, taking water from cooling system.

The Pressure sensor is right next door, you could T-off this opening and place temp sensor in this area. This appears to be coming directly from oil pump, talk about hottest point of access.

Good luck.
