How to bleed the brake fluids

I have done this with the 'engine off', keys out of the ignition. It seemed to go ok. My partner pushing the brake pedal down noticed it getting difficult to press down the pedal after the 2nd brake bleed.

Should the car/accessory be turned on during this process? (with the engine not running)?

Get some Speed Bleeders. Makes everything a lot easier
