Default Problem at the pump?

Just got back from the gas station and the car would not fill up? I had ablout 1/4 tank and 250 miles since I filled it up last week. I tell the kid fill it up and the nozzle clicks off at $8.50, he looks at me and I tell him it's not full try again. It won't take anymore so I look at the gauge and it now reads 1/2 a tank. I said OK I'll wait till it's low and try to fill up again and see if this was a glitch or a trip back to the dealer. Anyone else experience this ???

This isn't really a problem per se... some people were complaining about the pump prematurely stopping and this was what I think was happening (after looking around the web).

The is a vapor recovery line in most gas pumps that can get plugged with fuel if the previous person topped off the tank and gas back flowed in the line. If the vapor recovery line is plugged then until the station people clear the line, it'll keep acting funny.

This, I think, is what is causing the pump to think that the tank is full.

You'll find out that it happens randomly and that if you have 1/4 tank... just hold the pump and put in 5-8 gallons till your next fill-up. That way you'll get some gas, but not accidently top off.

Hope that helps.

My salesman said never to restart the car during filling. Something with the O2 sensor. One of the dealer's valets had done this and I think it screwed up the reading of the gas gauge.

Oh boy, I hope the car isn't running or ever started while filling up at a gas station. Isn't that a big no no to begin with? I.E. fire risk?

The last two times I tried to fill up my tank I was almost on E and it would only fill up to half way. Before that it would fill up all the way, no problem.

Don't know what the heck that means.

Most pumps are good, some are bad.
