Default Problem With MPG...???!!!

Lately I have noticed that my gas has been burning quicker than usual. I asked a friend of mine, also with a Z, and he said that his guage is reading 23mpg. I then went back to look at my guage, and mine said 6.4mpg...??? What could be causing this? Any ideas? I did get my fuel hoses replaced a while ago, I am not sure what the issue is. Any sugggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

are you actually getting 6.4mpg? The gauge could be reading wrong. Next time you fill up look at how many miles you drove and divide that by how many gallons you just put in the car. My guess is that your reader is messed

you would know if you were really only getting 6.4 mpg. You would be filling up every other day.

If the guage is correct, then this actually may be a similar problem as found in a few of the Altima's. They may need to reprogram your ECU.

This happened to me once. The gauge said I was getting a little over 4mpg when I obviously was not.
I resest the gauge and haven't had a problem since.

the gauge is never spot on. If you rely on it enough to complain about the numbers it shows, don't look at it any more.

the ONLY way to get true gas mileage is to calculate it yourself.

I agree that is the only way to get dead nuts accurate is to calculate for yourself, but it is nice to have a ball park estimation of your mpg without breaking out the calculator.
Btw, when I do calculate actual mpg -vs- the gauge reading, my gauge is usually pretty damn close.

Did you reset the MPG gauge? Hold down the button to reset it.

I only see that kind of mileage if I get mostly hwy and 6th gear.

My mix is 90/10 backroads/highway - nearly no highway at all, where I usually get at least 26 mpg. When I say backroads, I mean hilly country roads plus a little "town" driving.

20 mile commute to work, I stop and start up to 20 times between stop signs and lights - that's a killer on MPG. ALL highway I have seen over 30 mpg - even cruising along at 80-ish mph consistently.

Plus my DTE is coming from the NAV unit which may use a different calc - it clearly leaves 2+ gallons out of the equation, and tells me on average I have about 330 miles to the tank. That's about 18-19 mpg - so of course I run about about 17 with the snows on now - that's good for about -2 mpg.

All I can say is for the power on tap, NO complaints!
