Fuel Gauge not working.

Fuel Gauge not working.
I have a '03 Enth. (manuel)
37,000 miles
Problem:
- When my car hit 35,000 miles, my main fuel gauge was very inconsistant. The gauge needle would read "E" and my fuel light would go on - even when my DTE displays 100 miles left; this normally happens when my fuel tank is 1/2 or 1/4 full. The only way it I could correct this was turning my key to the ACC ON a couple of times till my Fuel Gauge needle was accurate.
- Also... my engine won't start sometimes too
It's really embarassing
Got Any Suggestions to this Problem?
- I hate taking it to the dealer, because I know they charge a arm & a leg for their time (my warrenty expired 3 months ago)
