Default Intake Timing Sensor ?

Is there a intake timing sensor on the VQ motor?
I just had one of these go out according to NISSAN on my Pathfinder.
The reason I bought my 350Z is because I had such good luck with my
Pathfinder's VQ motor. Well at least to this point. I just have never heard of this part before. I mean, I thought the MAF would take car of such intake air/fuel mix issues.

I have a warantee on the Pathfinder but this is not a named part on the warentee. Doh !! So, yet again, another part not covered by this warantee company. However, I don't blame them with such exotic names and parts we are now using.

I only assume that our 350Z's have the same part as this motor is almost identical to the motor in the Pathfinder.

Not really a big deal as the part installed is only $236 and I would have had to pay out $100 Ded anyways. So, I pay another $136 that I didn't expect, but it could be worse.

I still consider the VQ a great motor.... torque, smoothness, and pretty trouble free. Over the past six years including this repair I'll have only had to spend a little over $500. I figure that's pretty good. Warantee has paid $0 for my repairs. Still nice to know if the motor or drivetrain fries I get it handled.

Now NISSAN is saying this is also called a Variable Timing Control and I do not have the part or number yet. I'm thinking the warantee company is confused as I am and are not going to pay. Maybe I can get this paid for yet as my control shows for Timing Control Senors and such.

I can't believe how picky they are.

Input? Anyone know the number?

There are Camshaft Position Sensors on both banks. There is also an Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve on each bank.

I am not familiar with the Rev Up motors, but this is how it is on the non Rev Ups.

First picture shows the whole head assembly with the sensors and solenoid valves highlighted.

Second picture is the Camshaft Position Sensor.

Third picture is the Intake Valve Timing Control Solenoid Valve.

Hope this helps.

done12many2 - Thank you for your response. Your exactly right it ended up being VTC Sensor P/N 23731-2Y524 on the Pathfinder. I imagine it would be the same on our VQ Motor in the Z's.

Well, the part was $74.28, labor $270 (seems a bit stiff, but reasonable). I know the dia and replacement S/B only an hour ($135) but what do you do.
Most likely it is the standard cost in their book. So, it's OK.

While she was in I had a couple of Belts replaced since they recommended it and I had noticed the belts were getting noisy. Parts $37.47, Labor $120. That actually seems to be a good price because I know it would take me more than an hour to replace the belts ... start to finish.

I'll approach the warranty company and see if I can get the $244.28 back which is $344.28 - $100 Ded but all in all it's not such a bad deal. As I said, I haven't had to spend much on her for 6 years so it's way under my car maintenance budget of $60 a month. I would have had to spend $4320 to get to my budget number. So, I'm doing good in my opinion.

I think Superior Nissan did what they could and were reasonable in all regards. Most important they treated me with respect and did their best to explain what parts were bad. They did return the bad part to me for my use in pursuing part/ labor reimbursement. I know that I probably could have fixed this by going to auto zone and pulling the code .... but, by the time I figured out the part I would have wasted a whole day and their would not have been any chance of warranty recovery. So it is, what it is .....

Call the warranty company with the VTC Sensor name and pointed out to them that from my point of view it is basically a cam sensor. At least that is how I see this part. That is specifically called out in my policy. So, gray area.
They make lots of money on the part name not being exactly the same I figure. I'll give credit again to Superior NISSAN hear as they did have this reviewed with a supervisor when they called according to the notes the warranty company took. That make me feel pretty good.

I have been swearing off of extended warranties and this is the last one I have going ... so I do not think I'll ever buy another one. Yes, I might have to pay thousands of dollars in the future for repairs. But that beats thousands of dollars on warranties that don't pay off anyways in most cases. jmho.

I think that in a major engine failure ... they seem to cover better. Dunno

Thanks again - Hopefully, someone will get value out of this thread. - AJ

At least this easier to swallow than the $3K for repairs on my FORD lately.

Lastly, I hope these parts don't go out on my 350Z.
