I also have massive consumption (3 qts in 2500 miles). I tried to switch to dino oil but I had the same problem. Nissan has blown me off, sent me to other dealerships and made me do the oil consumption test 3 times with 3 different dealers with the same results. My car sounds like there are marbles in the engine and they still say "oh that is normal" or "within specs". BullSht, my first car was a 1980 subaru and it didn't sound as bad as this that.
I had enough and started the Lemon Law process. I would urge anyone to check the Lemon Law regulation in your state as they are not the same everywhere. I'm confident that I will win in this case.I feel that Nissan will do whatever they can to ignore or brush this issue under the rug. Please, please if you have any oil consumption over 1 qt per 3000 miles take your car in and at least register your complaint.

so is the thick black residue around the exhaust outlet considered oil burning? im on my 4th oil/filter change just last week, at 8k (every 2k) and car was new jan 2006. its now april 2007. i have NOT noticed any burning but everyone around me that has an 06 with mods if telling me its getting them already at low miles.
2k new oil filter, used mobil 1 synthetic
4k ditto
6k ditto
8k ditto with the exception i now use valvoline synthetic cuz they sponsored
my ride and its part of the deal.

i did notice because i can smell the emissions sometimes when the windows are down and at a stoplight at idle, after the valvoline the exhaust smell wasnt as near as severe as the mobil 1. was this cuz it was just out of the change??

I thought the smoke on my car was from fuel consumption but I guess oil consumption fits nicely as well. That is one I would like to know. I am chaning my oil here very soon, I will get a good measuring cup to figure out my exact oil consumption loss this go around.

You seem to have an 04, not too sure how you are going to be helpful to all these 06 owners!

Just added over a quart today... last time I added was right around or just under 1000 miles ago.

I'm not sure what dyno oil I'm going to end up switching over to. It sounds like until Nissan issues a recall I won't get any results without putting up a huge fight, and sadly with the way my schedule has been lately I just don't have the time. I'm hoping that the dyno oil helps or at least slows the consumption down some.

I got my 03 motor replaced under warranty at 30k miles in nov of 2005 because I was burning about 1qt per 500 miles. After diagnosis, my motor had 50% leak on 3 of the cylinders. It took 8 weeks in the shop but I got a new motor. I was running synthetics as well at that time and with the new motor I switched back to castrol 5w-30 dino oil and I no longer burn any oil between changes (the new motor now has 25k miles on it). I also autocross my car so it sees a lot of high revvs. I wont go back to synthetic.

If you are burning more than a quart per oil change there is something wrong. Get nissan to replace it. They will if you fight them enough and get Nissan of North America involved.

Goodluck.
