service engine soon

I've had the MIL come on and it was a random code not related to anything that I'd done to the car. Once I reset it, it never came back.
Best thing to do is get someone to check your code.

I don't own a Z, but (before buying my own scan tool) I had my BMW checked at Autozone for the generic OBDII readout.
They will ask you two things 1. How long has it been on for? (just reply, over a week) and 2. When's the last time you filled up? (just reply, over a week)
If you say anything else they'll tell you to come back or check the gas cap.

I had never heard of the gas cap issue prior to my engine light coming on... unfortunately isn't the gas cap... bummer. I checked the MAFS to see if it was gunked with filter oil from the NISMO CAI, but clean as a whistle. I didn't realize those stores would check the OBD code for free... I think I'm going to do that. I have about 57,000 on it. The only other time this light came on was when I stalled the car (at around 14,000) and my dome lights went out and the service engine soon light came on. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the ECU and some other computer component for free. I had punched it on the freeway (going about 80) and the car stuttered as if the TCS was on (but it wasn't)... I am wondering if that had anything to do with it. At any rate... I think I'm going to go get it checked.
