If Im not mistaken the splines have a flat on them that allows it to go on only one way, other wise ur steering wheel will be out of time. Of course you have it "cocked" in the picture. Get ur wheels straight, then get ur SW straight and inspect the male spline to find the "flat" ----It has to correspond to the "flat" in the Female side

Thats called a lot of things---steering Knuckle, steering U-joint etc

Its not a question of adjusting the SW, Its a question of the fact that most steering knuckles --Chev,Ford, Nissan have an alighment Key/Flat that has to line up. Kinda like the keyway on your Crank Damper or in some casrs the M/F splines on your Driveshaft yokes.

I as a matter of habit I center punch everything cuz I dont have to worry to bout it then, but if I didnt, there would be some indication to the original alignment.

A lot of times, a situation like u have there, the bolt wont go thru unless the alignment is right cuz the relief for the bolt on the shaft is just a half moon and has to line up with the full circle of the collar bore.

To be honest, I do so many that I dont think about it, and I cant say for sure how that set up is although I have had a lot apart for Header installs etc.

But I have never had to fight it and if you are, then something isnt lining up and shouldnt be a big deal if you look at it close

Hate to post hog---But----If hypothetically, there was no alignment guide, a person could easily assemble it and end up with the tires straight and the Steering Wheel 90 or 100 or 180 degrees off from center.

Hope that explains the REASON and NECCESSITY for alighnment index
