Hay guys what do you know about Synthetic Oil? Anyone got any opinions or knowledge of the best kind or brand they might use?

Whats the difference between synthetic oil and regular ones? I heard from the BMW dealer that their synthetic oil only needs to be changed every 10K miles compare to regular oil change at 3K miles. Is this the main difference? last longer?

 

Its the only way to go, my bmw m roadster can go 15 k between changes, only use mobil 1 thats what they reccomend. I put it in my z as soon as i got it home, for what its worth give it a try.

 

I still have my second change of run in oil at 3000km and will change to synthetic in a few weeks.

I can't see anyone running anything else over the long term imho.

 

I just changed my oil last weekend and put in Mobile 1 synthetic 5w30. I would definitely recommend it. I'm not sure if there is a correlation or not, but I'm still on the 1st tank of gas since changing the oil and my gas milage seems to be up at least 2 miles per gallon over my previous average.

One thing I have noticed though is that since the oil change, my oil pressure seems too high when the engine is cold and even for a little while after it gets to normal operating temp (i'm guessing the oil takes longer to come up to temp). When I run the car up to like 3500 rpms, the oil pressure gauge is nearly maxxed (like 115 psi!). It stablizes when the oil comes up to temp, but I don't remember it being that high, even when cold, before the change. Perhaps I just never payed enough attention.

I put in exactly 5 qts like the manual recommends w/ filter change. I used the genuine NISSAN filter. I made sure to drain all of the old oil out of the pan and filter first. I can't figure out if there's too much in it because that dipstick is the worst setup I have ever seen combined with the fact that the synth oil is so light in color that it can hardly be seen on a dipstick anyway when clean.

Has anyone else seen this behavior as well?

 

Its funny you mention this because im experiencing the same thing. I don't know why the pressure is do high when its cold. I used the same oil as you also. The dipstick really sucks on this car!

Mobil 1 10/30, Mobil 1 oil filter. Change every 10K miles or 1 year. JMS in TX.

 

I think that the change interval varies greatly depending on how you drive the car. If you spend a lot of time in stop and go traffic or if you drive the car harder than average, I'd suggest changing the oil much earlier. I think 10K/1year is about the absolute maximum to go on 1 batch of oil. Personally, I drive my car pretty hard and I do some auto-x, so I'll change at no more than 5K miles. If you do most of your driving at constant speeds on the freeway though, I'm sure you can get 10K miles out of it.

 

For everyone who is using synthetic oils... did you all read the owners manual where it states that Nissan only recomends MINERAL based oils?

Is there ANY warranty issue with using Synthetics? Any idea WHY Nissan does not recommend them? I've NEVER heard of any problems with Synthetics...

 

My first oil change is quickly approaching. I plan to use Mobil One 5W/30... I used Mobil one in my last auto...can't answer the question on why Nissan recommends Mineral based oil..

 

I also plan to use X-1R Oil treatment/additive. I sued it in my wife's E-320 and the engine is running much smoother (even my wife noticed it).

I use Amsoil ASL 5w30. No oil pressure problems.

 

I had the oil changed yesterday. We used Mobil 1 5/30w. The car did not experience any noticable change in oil pressure. I also added X1R Oil treatment. So far so good.

I've used Mobil 1 for the last 15 years and I've never had any oil related problems. I change at 5000 miles and replace with a factory oil filter each time.

On my Z I changed to Mobil 1 at 1000 miles, 2500 miles and now I'm at 5000 and ready for another oil and filter change. This is not the first time over the years I've done it this way on a new car or truck. I'm more concerned about the casting sand and metal shavings slopping around in the original oil during the initial break-in period. The sooner the original oil and filter are changed, the better!



Does anyone have experience using RedLine's motor oils? I'm considering switching but I don't know about their recommendation to change at least once per year while replacing the oil filters at the regular change interval mileages. Do I filter or strain the drained oil only to place it back into the motor once the new filter has been put on? I'm not sure about that method; seems scary to me and counter to what I've all done through the years.

for you guys who are running synthetics. Are you extending the drain intervals (compared to if you were running dino juice?)

 

From this point forward I'll change at every 5000 or six months whichever is first.

I still don't know how many miles I'll put on the Z per year, so I have to remain somewhat vague about it for now. It took almost 9 months just to get to 5500 today, but that was over a long and lousy winter.
