battery leak?
On my other car my battery looks like it is leaking i have blue solid stuff all over the positive terminal and it seems like the bolt that attachs the positive cable to the terminal has been corroded by the acid, so it will be difficult to remove. does this mean i need to get a new battery? thanks
Corrosion is normal.
I'd suggest, though, if it is leaking.
Get some eye protection and gloves. Then mix a batch of battery acid 1:3 with cool water. Then spray the whole deal on a pair of jeans and wash it off after about 3 minutes.
DIY jean trendiness.

Honestly, I'd just get a new battery. Sounds like this one is giving you crap and if it's going to be in your Z then don't take any risks. Just get a new one. Before you know it, the acid is going to eat the plastic covering on your engine cover and eat plastic tubing and eventually make your engine bay look ghetto.

2) Battery acid will NOT attack plastic. That's why bettery trays and boxes are made of plastic. And the container that the concentrated acid comes in is plastic.
3) Clean the area (with baking soda) and removing, cleaning, lubricating the tighteneing the clamps should take car the problem.

I'm not calling you out, I am just suprised. I figured it would.
Clean up the mess including a new clamp----Do an ALT test and make sure its not exceeding 14.7 volts, if you lost a rectifier you may be over ampin and boiling the battery acid---Hence--fumes and surounding corrosion
I put a Battery Mat under each of my car batteries - 1 in the Z, and one in my DD. It is supposed to absorb corrosive battery acid that may leak out of an aging battery.
The one in the Z is the OE one with 37k miles. The car is an 04.
The one in the BMW is about 3 years old with 30k+ on it.
Each of the Battery Mats under the batteries have slight deposits of white powder on them around the perimeter of the battery's footprint.
As far as I'm concerned, these batteries are kind of new. I mean, not brand new, but they're definitely not old. The terminals and connectors are 100% clean, the powder is just showing up around the bottom.
Normal? Anything to worry about? I just plan on keeping both cars for a long, long time, so I am more concerned with any corrosion that may occur on the body of the car if battery acid leaks out.
