Default Calling All Mechanics!

A Friend of mine on this other forum asked for help with his Honda Civic...heres his post....If u could help him so that way i can tell him. thanx!

Im having a little trouble with my car... just wondering if any mechanics/honda specialists could possibly help me out here...

well for the specs here they are:

96 honda civic EX coupe.
1.6 Sohc Vtec
Manual trans

okay after i changed my fuel filter, im having low/really poor gas mileage! i mean, i put in a full tank and only get, if lucky, 150 miles. thats like 15 miles per gallon. i have double checked and rechecked agian for leaks, also i have taken out my injectors cleaned them, made sure they are tight.

the exhaust spits out alot of smoke(black). fills my barn/garage in minutes and makes it unbreathable. any insight would be helpful. i know its spittin way too much fuel, but what would cause this? maybe a bad o2 sensor? timing? anybody who could possible shine some light on this would, that would be GREAT!

all i know is its running rich. could be his injectors or timing i would guess.
i dont know anything about mechanics yet but im enrolling at uti in the next year. :P i guess that because my 1970 mustang had the same problem and i had to buy a timing light and turns out my car was running rich. black smoke = rich white smoke = lean.

I'm sure someone could help you out more then i can.
but good luck to your friend.

Are you sure you installed it right? I did one of my friend civic from pulling teh rear seats out. Make sure it's installed correctly and allowing fuel to go through it.

What CEL # is he getting? If it's a bad O2 sensor then his CEL should be on. For the 96 civics you can get the code by turning your car to AC. After all the lights go off you should get a couple of blinks for the first #. There should be a plause after that and then another series of blinks for the second#. It does appear he is running super rich. The ECU may have been reset to do so to protect the engine.
