Default Rear Diff Fluid: Base Model

I have an 04 Base model...no LSD obviously....and was just wondering if the recommended GL5 80w90 is what I should be using, or is it different considering I don't have an LSD

With an open diff, you probably wont ever need to change the oil in it unless you are just looking for things to work on... there is preventative maintenance, and then there is wasting your time/money...

When I changed the fluid @ 50,000 miles, it was almost black and reminded me of chocolate milk. Also had some metal shavings.

Change the fluid, its cheap insurance and not hard to do.

thanks all! Me changing the fluid is a combination of it being cheap insurance, piece of mind, and the fact that i like to get underneath there, look around, and do something mechanical (-ish).

By the way, I spoke with a few service reps at different dealers in my area, and even a rep directly from Nissan, and they just said anything GL5 80w90 would be just fine. I even went to a dealer to buy the stuff because he said he stocked it (other dealers only had it in bulk for shop use) and when I get there, he puts two quarts of Pennzoil 80w90 GL5 gear oil in front of me. I was like "where's the nissan logo?" to which he responded, "this is what Nissan sends us directly to use in your car's differential, whether it has limited slip or not." He even showed me the corresponding Nissan part number. So i thanked him, politely refused to pay over $10 a quart for the stuff, and am about to proceed to wal mart this evening to buy it for probably half the price

Hope this info helps someone in the future!

not according to the dealer I spoke with. He convinced me Nissan shipped them pennzoil to put in the vehicles. I have no idea on this one.

I use Redline Oil. I mix the 2(MTL) with 2(MT-90). Was told the correct weight for the diff was 75w85. I change it about every ~40K miles as well. I have a Base Z, btw.

Yes it will, but you'll need the axle stubs as well.

The axle stubs from the VLSD are what you'll need.

I went to Nissan dealership today and asked for differential fluid. The parts guy brought out "Nissan Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) 75W-85." We weren't sure if this was the right one, or if they used this in all there manual transmission Nissan vehicles. He said, the mechanics use 80w-90 but it's all in bulk. The 75W-85 just sits in the back on the shelves. We went into the discussion about z's with LSD and base models. I had never heard of anyone using 75W-85, all I had read about was 75w-90 and 80w-90. So 75W-85 is okay to use as long as you have a base model? Meaning all vehicles that have LSD, must have fluid starting at 75W-90 and higher?

Sorry, am retarded, you asked about the diff, and I answered referencing the tranny... Only had about 4 hours of sleep total in 3 days when I answered lol.

I use Redline 75w90 in the diff. the mixture I described earlier goes in the tranny.

Here's a link to what I use...

That was actually my first time, posting in this thread. You stated earlier, that you used 75w-80 in your diff and changed it every 40k miles. Now your sayin you used redline 75w-90, im a bit confused. So you used redline mixed in ur trans but what about "75w-85 is recommended in the diff" Is 75w-80 only used in the trans. Are we both still sleepy

Sorry, the 75w85 is recommended in the transmission. That's where I use the mixture of (2x) Redline MTL and (2x) Redline MT-90 at. I use (2x) Redline 75w90 in the diff.
