Question For those with feathering?

At what point (miles) did you start to notice the problem?

I've got nearly 1,700 miles on my car thus far, and there's no sign of feathering yet. Just wanted to know if I'm in the clear, or if it's still a possibility?

I noticed excessive tire noise around 4000 miles.

Default Tire Feathering

My vin is 725. My feathering did not start until about 5000 miles. Took car in and alignment was way off front and rear for toe.

Had car aligned and new tires (S-03's) from Nissan installed. So farI have about 2300 miles on new tires and they look good. I am not holding my breath though. I suspect in another 2-3k miles I will see it again.

I am not spending a dime on the suspension and tires until Nissan fixes this problem.

Default Still a problem

I decided to check my tires after reading the note on known problems located in this forum. Much to my dismay, my tires had visible feathering @ just over 4k miles.

I promptly took my Z to the dealer, who performed a four wheel alignment even though the car was "not out by much". They refused to admit that the wear is not "normal" and since they are responsible for submitting reports to NNA on behalf of my claim I am experiencing serious resistance.

Last week, the car went in for an oil change. While they had it on the lift I pointed out the problem, which was worse by then (6500 miles) to the service manager and the shop foreman. They rotated the front tires from side to side to even out the wear--which would be construed as an admission of guilt by any logical human being-- but again they stopped short of admitting my car has a problem.

They refuse to put new tires on and refuse to address the underlying cause. I hope you don't have to deal with belligerent ignorance on the level I've experienced.

Did nissan pay for the tires? If so how did you convince them?

Default New tires from Nissan

Yes Nissan gave me new tires. In fact because the fronts were back ordered for 6 months they gave me the same brand of tire (Bridgestone) but some really nice S03's.

I was actually pretty surprised I did not have to fight for new tires very hard. I think for me there were two key things that happened:

1. Alignment settings were way out. Do not look at the numbers per say, but instead compare the alignment readings before to the alignment specs and then quote how much in percent it was out of spec. Example is say toe spec is 0.00-0.06 and car maeasured at 0.12. Does not sound like much but that is 100% out of the spec limit. HUGE. In my case my wheels avg. between 100-200% out of spec.

2. My dealer was actually very helpful and requested that Nissan authorize new tires. Now initially they gave me the ******** that this is normal tire wear and it is because they are performance tires. I looked into the eyes of the service manager and said "BULL$HIT" and told him that I know more about this car then he does so don't try and screw me. Oddly after that I did not have any more resistance from them or Nissan.

I think it is really the dealer that can convince Nissan to authorize new tires. If your current dealer is a dick then goto another one even if it is out of the way.

Also, take a print out the tire feathering thread and the TSB for the tire noise and show them that this is not normal and you want it fixed.

My $0.02

Step off soap box.

I have a Performance model VIN 4104. I have ~ 9500 miles and have only recently within the last few hundred miles or so begun to notice the roaring noise while stopping. Curious as to what it was & then read thru parts of one of the feathering threads & found that' it may be related. Looked at my front tires (which I hadn't done in a while) & can see what I presume is early stages of feathering along the inside of both front tires. I have an appointment to take it in for alignment & whatever else they think they might need to do. I think I need to dig thru the big feathering thread some more & see what else people are doing.

I first noticed it at 3800. Tires were definately OK at 3000. I just took it to the dealer today at 4500. The Tech immediately ordered new RE040's for me, said that the rotating was a waste of time. I'll give them a week then call and see when they expect to get the tires. If it is going to be a long time I will definately hit them up for S03's!

How many people got S03's and did they do all 4?

Hey Stone-
Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones but I noticed mine at around 4500 miles. I have already taken it back to the dealer once for an all wheel alignment but ended up being a waste of time, I still have the problem. Just made another appointment to bring it back again next week- looks like I am getting new tires from NNA.
Good Luck!
